Subject: esr reading

hi
doctor just told me my ESR has jumped up to 29 - what is normal(ish) level if it is high now? I have been hobbling about pain (sometimes agony) for over 8 weeks now so obviously swelling is up a notch. have consultant tomorrow as think he is now going to have to change meds, methotrexate tablets didn't work, the jabs have obviously not had much impact.

You'll find normal CRP if you google. Can't remember off hand but it is clear you have inflammation, Hope they get some meds sorted for you. xx

Hi Willis,

Well, I'm glad you've got some help. With the assessment you have to score so many points on the DAS Score (google it, it will tell you everything) on two occasions a month apart. Problems arise when you are taking steroids/have had an injection as chances are the score will be lower. Something you should talk to your nurse about when s/he assesses you. I had that problem myself.

They should give you some info on the anti tnfs. People respond differently to them to it is often a bit of trial and error to get the drugs right for some people. I was put on Cimzia first and now Enbrel. I've had quite a lot of problems but lots of people do well on them.

Arthritis Care, NRAS and Arthritis Research all have loads of info on them and it is very good.

I've been enjoying the hot weather for a change, usually I find it too much but it's cool at night which helps.
take care

thanks for input guys - i've had 2 DAS tests so far bsk - one was 6.7 next it was 4.9 yesterday it was 6.9. thing is now, after the steroid injection i have stuffed nose, very sore ear on right hand side - wondering if i have infection and the soreness of past 8 weeks has been a flare because of infection. so off to doctors tomorrow to see if i need anti biotics and i'll see rhuemy nurse in 3 weeks. consultant did say if i give you steroid injection it will make you better and then effect the assessment but he couldn't sit and watch me struggling the way i was. so we'll see. yup all trial and error but just being able to walk without grimacing is nice :) enjoy the sun while it lasts xxx

Hi Willis, I understand how you feel. I think ESR should be below 10, although that can be almost impossible with inflammatory conditions. On my last test the ESR was 51 and it has even been up at 95 although that is a ridiculous level. I am on rituximad at the moment along with mtx etc and still my esr is high, i don't know what it going to take to get mine down.

Good luck with the anti-tnf, i think i have just been very unlucky and as bsk says it is sometimes a bit of trial and error.

Take care x
