Subject: Can't get arthritis in your back?????

I was diagnosed with RA 8 years ago. Recently it has been spreading into my hips and the bottom of my spine and is very painful. I am on methotrexate, folic acid, lansaprazole and zomorph. My consultant has retired so I went to see a new one. I was told the pain in my back is not th RA as you cannot get it in your back and he is the doctor! I told him that I have been having steroid injections for years to calm it down and I know what pain I am feeling. I felt very patronised and as made to feel as if my problems are of no interest to this new guy. I was given a 6 month review date and sent on my way. Has anyone else had this reaction from a so called rheumatology consultant?

I told my rheumatologist that i would get a pain in my hip on a regular basis. It hurt to walk. He asked me to cross my legs which i did, it wasn't hurting that day. He said, nothing wrong with your hip. I really do not like him. I find him arrogant and have no confidence in him.

Well I think some of these consultants could do with experiencing what they are supposed to be treating then they might have more idea and sympathy. Some haven't aaving clue and when your h to walk as part of your job it becomes impossible at times. I have asked for a new referral.

Have you tried those bespoke shoes or insoles you can get? Just adds that extra bit of comfort for you? I tried everything and they were pretty good. Best ones i've found were www.insolesbyhappyfeet.co.uk. I reccomend reading the clinical studies bit on their site as it's quite interesting

My late mother had ra and oa. She had pain all over. I have lupus which is supposed to affect the large joints and ra which affects the hands and feet. My rheumatologist said it's not true ra as it doesn't affect my hands and feet. I nearly told him, tell that to my hands and feet because it's my hands and feet that are causing me the most pain.

Yes these consultants seem to think they know more about the pain than we do and we are the ones in pain. I'm so fed up of hurting and not getting the help others seem to.
Merryn I have tried those insoles from the podiatrist but i will have a look at that website. Thanks

when you see your doctor next ,, ask him to explain what Ankylosing spondylitis is ... then say can you not get arthritis in your back..

Hello Sharon
I have suffered with JRA from the age of 7 I am now in my 50s. . diagnosed with RA , psoriatic Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, connective tissue disease, I do suffer from severe degenerative arthritis in my spine. and I do get pain in my hips. You are on very serious drugs, . Get to a rheumatologist at a teaching hospital. That is where you belong. Communicate and don't be intimidated. Read everything you can about these drugs be you own advocate. Find a doctor who will be a partner in your health and well being. You will need that physically and emotionally.
