Got the idea for starting this thread from Ann. What do you do when you are stuck at home because of mobility problems?

Hi bsk, what a good idea. I also get bored and very frustrated as i can't do what i want to do and i have always been an independent person (hate asking for help) I would be lost without my laptop, i can send emails, chat to my daughter in Spain, shop etc. I also enjoy reading and i watch a bit of TV, it can be very difficult when you are not at yourself to get the energy to do new things but i would be interested to hear what everyone else does when they are stuck at home.

While I was waiting for my second hip replacement I used to go to the library. I also took a Open University course to keep my mind active. They are quite good for providing funding for courses. I watch TV or films, companies like Love Film are good because they send DVDs through the post, you can rent films as well as TV series and the cost isn't too much. I also like to draw and paint. Short walks can help, not just to keep your joints moving but also exercise helps with depression. Like you say using the internet. or you could learn a foreign language.

Like the idea of doing an Open University course. I draw and paint when I can and read a lot. Would be lost without internet and my garden, even when I'm really bad I can get out there in the summer. Frustrates me to see the weeds though!

I find listening to music really therapeutic and you cant beat a good book. My grandad bless him who was virtually blind and very limited with mobility towards then end of his life loved trawling the internet for all kinds of weird and wonderful music, he also used a computer programme to do wonderful paintings. I like to do the competitions in magazines such as take a break as keep my brain active and helps me practise my grip whilst using a pen!

I have just taken up tropical fish keeping it can be costly to start with, but it is such a relaxing thing to watch the fish. Then I have my garden love gardening like you bsk, I do the best I can with it. I have the internet and love history so it is all there to read. I also love music and that is on the internet as well. I don't watch a lot of TV, when I do it is usually late at night when sleep escapes me, Take Care everyone!!!!

Cake making is great, my sister does it too, she is very artistic. You must be too Davina. Tropical fish is a great idea but suspect my cat would sit in front of the tank all day with her head going back and forth!

The OT used to get me to make shortbread when I saw her at the hospital because it gets your fingers moving. I wouldn't recommend too much whisking though because it plays havoc with my wrist!

I tried reading 50 shades of grey, I didn't even get to the properly racy bits because I got so frustrated with the dreadful writing! I would say if you like books that are well written, with characters you actually like, then I wouldn't recommend it. If you can get passed the writing and get to the second book, then apparently the writing suddenly changes half way through (so I'm told)!

I will call you Lady Gaga from now on Marlene! Davina, my paintings are usually abstract but I do like still life as well. Problem is the cat likes to walk all over my work so it's a bit tricky to do anything at times. 50 shades seems to be a very successful marketing exercise. She must have made millions from it. Not particularly tempted mostly because of the bad writing as Twohip says. I'm reading Capital by John Lanchester at the moment. Not brilliant but quite enjoyable so far.
