Subject: Ive had to stop Methotrexate

Hi everyone,

I have been told to stop taking my methotrexate as my alt has been on the rise since I started taking it about 3months ago. On my latest test my alt was 98.

Has anyone else had this happen?

So now I've tried sulphasalazine and had a bad reaction and now I can't take the methotrexate. What might I be put onto next? Anti tnf?

Any advise much appreciated.

Mike , 98 is not that high , over 130 is , how many folic acid you taking & how much Mtx , I am on 25mg Mtx now & for years my ALT was over 98 & now back to normal , folic acid is the answer

Hi Colin.

I was on 15mg of methotrexate and initially taking colic acid the following day but then upped it to taking it everyday apart from the day I take methotrexate.

Now I've been told just to carry on with naproxen and will be reviewed next rime I see rheumy which is about 3 months.

what dose folic acid you taking , some on here told to take the 400mcg which is about 1/12th of the 5mg we normaly take

my ALT went up to 167 so they reduced the mtx & put me on 5mg folic acid six days a week ,

hope they sort it soon , sulphasalazine is not as good as Mtx

Just been researching this a bit, hope to go back onto MTx soon.

5mg of folic acid (prescription) daily is what NICE suggests.
Some doctors advise to take it on every day except the day of your MTx dose - so 6 days a week.

My readings went up to about the same and my rheumy wasn't concerned at all. On my insistence, because of family history of auto immune liver disease, I insisted on further investigations. They found nothing.

I stopped mtx for other reasons but when I was on it I took 5mg folic acid 5 days a week but not on day to mtx or day after.

If you've tried two Dmards then you can be considered for anti tnf.

Have you asked about leflunomide, I was unable to continue with my mtx when I was 18 as it made me so sick and they changed me over to leflunomide which worked really well for me for about 8 years, then they put me on anti tnf. I now have humira, leflunomide and mtx.

Hi Suz, I had my right hip replaced in 2006 and my left one in 2007. My hip replacements are fantastic, much better than my original hips. My left one does click sometimes and occasionally I get pins and needles in my foot, but after having physio to correct my posture (having put all my weight onto my left hip whilst waiting for my right one to be replaced I was left a bit wonky) I found it doesn't do it as much and if I had continued to keep up with my exercises it probably wouldn't do it at all. My lifestyle is quite active, I currently teach a reception class, cross train regularly and cycle (today I cycled 35 miles). My ra is also well controlled at the moment. I haven't found the steroids have affected the hip replacements, although they were the cause of my hip damage.

Mine went up to 250. Horrible drug in my opinion. I will never take it again
