Subject: Diet and arfuritus....

How effective is losing weight in the fight agin arfuritus in a knee joint? I can see the reasoning behiind it... putting less strain on the joint and wotnot.
As someone who is overweight, and fighting it, I'm getting the distinct impression from the quack and nurse I'm seeing that my arfuritus is the just punishment for being a fat bastard!
Has anyone had a real benifit from weight loss... I've lost over two stone, yet still in constant pain?

Hi Hopalong, well I lost three stones at one point and never felt a bit better for it. I am sure overall we have a better fitness if we are slimmer. I gave up smoking and had a spinal op and hey ho three stones back on.I have a good willpower normally but this diet thing makes me miserable just thinking about it.
Having booked a holiday and wanting to get in the pool and swim the 1st of august is my starting date. Heres hopeing I stick to it.
All joking aside I am sure our joints must be better off with less weight even if we are still in pain, it is just logic.
Take Care. Keep smiling.

Hi Hopalong, I have RA and I think that losing weight can help with pain, I lost two stone and found my knee pain has lessened. Although it also probably depends on how heavy you are to start with, I'm 5ft nothing and now weigh 8 and a half stone. I have also found that the more exercise I do the better my joint pain is. Generally losing weight will help give a better quality of life. The first bit on this web page is quite interesting:

Hope this helps.

well about 4 years ago i went to 'quack' with painful knee - couldn't describe the pain as it was inside the knee - he recommended i buy something over counter - supplements - i told him i was changing diet to put on weight as had lost a lot - he said and I quote "better to be thinner and have a sore knee than to be overweight" - my point being not for you to loose weight - why didn't he pick up on it being arthur???? donkey. but in all seriousness hopalong i've put on 1.5stone and am better for it as was way underweight - it does put less pressure on joints being lighter but go back to quack and nurse and tell them you want help - better help with the pain - reminding them how much weight you have lost and it isn't helping yet.
take care, happy exercising from one of the laziest people on planet - exercise is my fingers on keyboard :)
