Subject: Kneed help!!!

I went to the Docs recently with pains in my knee, I'm a 55 year old bloke. After an x-ray he told me I had arthritis, and to lose weight, he didn't want to give me drugs as I'm diabetic.
I've lost two stone and the pain went, so I started exercising agian, now I'm in agony with a constant pain and limp!
is there anything I can do, wear, or take to help cope? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Hopalong, I am guessing it is osteo arthritis that you have. Well done on losing two stone. I don't know what type of exercise you have been doing but sometimes running etc can put strain on the knees and cause pain. I would recommend swimming as it is much easier on the joints. You can buy supports for the knee that may help.

If you have OA over exercising can cause pain. Do you have any decent pain meds??? You could go back to your GP and explain what has happened. Physio is good ask GP to refer you to your local hospital.
You could also ask for MRI or CT scan to see exactly what is going on. I am also an OA sufferer so I do feel for you.Hope this little input helps.
Take Care and hope the knee settles soon.

Thanks for that ladies. So far the only advice I've had from the quack is weight loss. I've got an appointment this Friday and would appreciate advice on the kind of things I should be asking. Rhona, have you any details on the knee supports you mentioned? Mine's a recent diagnosis so any advice would be great.

Hi, I agree with Marlene, i would be asking to be referred to a physio and they can also supply you with supports. There are various types of supports, i bought one that i found quite helpful, i think i got it at asda pharmacy, it was an elasticated type support that you pulled over the knee and it came in different sizes. Some people also find fish oil capsules are benefical. Perhaps a heat pad might also help with the pain. If the pain is bad then your doc with give you painkillers. best wishes.

Hi Hopalong, you could go to a pharmacy and they will give you good advice as to what support for your knee.
Sport shops are good. Ask your gp and then google they are so much cheaper on line.
It might be useful although most people hate this suggestion a walking stick for support on bad days.
Ask your GP for pain meds and ask for some kind of scan as x-rays are not that great for OA.
Good Luck at the Doc's let us know how you get on.
Take Care

Hi Hopalong,

Whether you have OA or RA it is, in my experience, possible to deal with this without recourse to prescription drugs. I was on strong drugs for Anky Spond and psoriatic Arthritis for over 30 year. Six months ago I began drinking Aloe Vera gel. I am now pain free, the swelling in my joints has gone and I have more energy than I have known for years. To give you some idea how bad I was my wife had to put on my shoes and socks each day and fasten the top button of my shirt and tie my tie. Also, my right knee was so swollen that my GP recommended draining it under local anaesthetic.

Hi Chris,

yes indeed. It is Aloe Vera Freedom Gel manufactured exclusively for Forever Living Inc of America. It is not on prescription nor can it be bought from shops. Forever Living has been trading since 1978 and is now in 150 countries with a turnover of $2.6 billion US. Of that the Gel drinks (of which there are three) make up half their annual turnover. From the start they have only ever sold product through self employed distributors who are encouraged to retail stock and build a team. There is a 60 day money back guarantee on the product so my view was that I had nothing to lose and, if they had been selling the drink for so many years it must work.

Hi, just been looking around the internet at the sites on Forever living with interest. Then I looked on Wikipedia which is something I always do to check the background on companies. Ummm I was I bit surprised to read this company was fined 280000 dollars after they were taken to task by Hungary for the products being in violation of several laws. Before buying any products you may all like to read the article as this wasn't the only down side to this company.
Ian if this product works for you then let me be the first to say fantastic.
Can I also say advertising is not allowed on this forum.
Take Care and sorry if I sound a bit negative but after spending money on things that have no value, I am a once bitten twice shy kinda person.

Hi Marlene,

All I can say is that after 30 years on prescrpition drugs it is wonderful to be pain free and have energy. Obviously I do not know the background to Hungary and I am aware of the fact that this forum is not for selling product but feeling as I do I can do no other than share my personal experience. Like you I have tried many things over the years but this has quite literally astonished me.

Sorry, Ian if I sound like a downer but, i have had OA since my thirties and now at 61yrs I have tried everything and I know there is no cure but I have learned to help myself.
My sister-in-law suffers ankling spondilitis (spelling) like me has had back suregery. She was also told no cure, she also has severe eye problems caused by this. My brother-in-law has RA like so many on this forum and his eyes are also affected.
So when I hear some one saying something has cured them I do look on with interest, but I worry that young people who are clutching at staws will spend endless money on something that is nothing more than a health drink. Yes I am aware Aloa Vera has a good quality in many ways as for a cure?? If this was such a fantastic product why is it not widely prescribe by Drs and Rhumy teams????
I also read that this company is not renowned for treating its workers that great (selling agents) it is there to read on wikipedia.
I wish you continued good health with this product but would ask you to be mindful that some people could take your advice and come off meds without the support of the Gps and Rhumy teams that are working so hard to bring them back to health.
Take Care.

Hi, I use voltarol, don't know if it's similar or not. I find it is the best of all the over the counter creams i have used, although it just eases the pain a little but i suppose anything that helps at all is worth a try.

Not over impressed with this illness, think I'll send it back and get another one!

Sometimes I wonder if something told me that when I got older I would have plenty of rubbish chucked my way. LOL
Take Care and I hope you are enjoying this weather.

Hating every minute of it, no excuse to NOT go in the garden... the pain in mi' earhole from Mrs Hopalong's nagging, about grass and privet, is nearly as bad as the pain in mi' knee!
