Subject: psoriatic arthritis - ??

I am 27 years old and was just diagnosed with pa about 9 weeks ago. Its all happened so fast and it is still getting worse every day, it only started in my thumb. In the past nine weeks its still in my left thumb and now index finger, my entire right hand, both feet, right knee and right hip. I cant walk very far so i dont get out much at the moment. Im self employed as a cake designer and would really love to continue. I wont take the methotrexate as im activly trying for a family with my husband so im taking sulfasalazine. It dosent seem to be working yet but there being very aggresive with steriod injections directly into the joints. I would be very gratefull for any advise from people who have experienced this and if theres any therapys to be recommended? Does reflexogily therapy help?

Hi Jessica I have PA also got it 2 years ago at 33 so I know how u feel it started in my shoulder and progressed from there now have it in every joint even my jaw it is agony and unfortunately for me I've tried hydrocloruquine then shulphasalazine then methotrexate lefloumide gold injections enbrel anti tnf injections then back onto methotrexate to at the moment being on no disease modyfying drugs at all, it is a hard 1 as I have 3 fab kids and I know how much having them means to me so if I had been childless when diagnosed I would probably be going down the route your on, the shulphasalazine can take a good few months to show signs of improvemt I was only on it 3 weeks then came out in a rash all over but hopefully if you stick with it things will improve I have heard that if your pregnant then your symptoms can go into a sort of remission but returning once the pregnancy is over, it's all so bewildering and confusing but as time passes you will start to know what your body can and can't do as for your job that's a hard 1 because my hands and wrists are the sorest part so it is defiantly not something I can do but hopefully you can continue.

Keep me posted and good luck xx

Hey Jessica,
i consider myself lucky to have only bouts of bad PA in my life, altho i got my 1st set of fat toes in my late teens.
It might be the same for you, my disease seems to occur in cycles.
There are some pretty good 'biologic' drugs, that seem to work for most people, unfortunately if you're english you'll have to jump thru some hoops before you can get them.
Lastly i'd recommend looking at diet. It seems to help some people very much and do nothing for others.
All the best,
Chris

"Jump through hoops" I like it, you will have to be pretty imobile before they'll consider you.
I am Naproxyen and Methotrexate. I was on Lyflodomide, but have come off due to numbness in toes. I am waiting to see consultant for bnext course of action. Should have been a 3 month appointment, this is now 1 month overdue, with no indication of when I'll be seen.

I find it hard mentally too Jess, but we can only play the hand we're dealt. :(

By the way Martin, i was 1st put onto biologics due to side effects of the 'standard' drugs, so there may be some hope there. Best of luck.

My heartfelt prayers for all of you...May each moment you suffer in pain result in making you stronger and more grateful of life and its blessings...

Jess, coming to peace with the situation helps along way to taking the edge off...Acceptance in any situation is very important, for once you've accepted what you're dealing with you can use your energy to look for help and treatment and sort it actively rather than going into a vicious cycle of 'why's and don'ts'...It can become a bloody battle adding to your already painful dilemma, depleting the energy levels needed in order to live your life to the fullest possible...Be proactive Jess, don't allow the feeling 'sorry for yourself' to take over...You're as strong as you want to be!

Reflexology is brillant for most Arthritic ailments, give it a go along side your meds, what have you got to lose...As I have been told by a couple of good friends on here try Hydrotherapy...the warming water and exercise may also help... xxx
