Subject: Off medicaton

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone could advise on painkillers. I was on mtx and sulpha for about 2 years but because of nasty side effects making me really unwell my GP told me stop all of them immediately, which I did about 2 months ago. Now I remember what the pain was really like!! My question is - paracetamol does not help much at all when the pain is bad, I can't take coedine because it makes me sick, so does anyone have any suggestions about painkillers that really work well, or should I be asking the gp for something on prescription? Thanks for your help.

Ive was taken off all of my RA drugs end of March this year due to high liver readings, Had to stop taking prescribed pain killers as well and just to take paracetamol. Like you, not much help at all, so I was given oral steroids. Instant pain relief. These can not be used long term, I must warn you here, they are only for pain relief and do nothing to slow down the disease.

I have had two normal range blood test results and have just started on MTX only, lower dose than before to see how my liver reacts. SLZ to be added I assume later. The only problem with steroids is the longer you are on them the longer it takes to wean yourself off them. You can not just stop taking them. I have asked to wean myself off them, knowing that they won't beable to assess how the MTX is working whilst steroids are masking the symptoms and lowering my inflammation levels. I have only been 10mg a day and it will take me if all goes to plan 6 weeks to wean myself off them.

Hope you find something soon.

Paula

Hey Sandie, i'm always amazed too when the pain returns to it's fuller strength.
Like an idiot i have let this happen over the last couple of days, by not taking my pain meds...

I'm on Pregabalin, which is more of a 'pain modifier' than a pain killer - anyway i havn't looked to much into how it works.. all i know is that it's amazing.
I was put on it after being referred to the chronic pain team.
It can also be supplemented with the 'normal' painkillers.

Hope this helps,
Chris
