Subject: Psoriatic Arthritis without psoriasis?!

I am new to this forum but glad I found it. I am awaiting a diagnosis but for now the rheumatologist thinks it may be Psoriatic Arthritis. Just waiting for all the blood tests to come back and i should know next week. Strangely I don't have or have never had psoriasis. He said this is how it develops for some people - first the arthritis and then at some later date the psoriasis appears! Is anyone else in a similar position? My doctor thinks it sounds more like Lupus so I will have to wait and see. My symptoms are from the feet up - very swollen ankles and right foot, swollen knees, painful left shoulder and arm, painful swollen thumb and pinky, back, neck on the right side and also my jaws!! Can survive with pain killers during the day but night time is a nightmare and I get very little sleep.I hobble about during the day and am currently off work until this is diagnosed and treatment starts. Does this sound like to psoriatic Arthritis to anyone who may have similar symptoms? It has all happened so fast and has been a real shock to me! Love to hear from anyone similar.
Does this sound lik

Hi christel,
Welcome to the forum it sounds very like pa to me as you have a lot of the same symptoms as myself I have pa had it for 12yrs took the arthritis first then the psoriasis thank goodness only have it on my feet hands and face but more red on the face like sunburn but is not itchy like the rest.

Before I had pa even from a young age early teens I was always tired more so than the rest of my friends but put it down to looking after my disabled mum.Was always getting blood tests but nothing came back.

Then finally I had a diagnosis at age 33 am now 45.
Hopefully you will find out what type you have (if any) and let us know how you get on.
best wishes Deborah x

Thanks Deborah for your reply.
I hope things aren't too bad for you at the moment. Are you taking methotrexate? I have been told that whatever arthritis it is, this is the most likely drug I will have to take but it seems to have significant side effects.Do you mind me asking how long after the PA did P appear? I guess it will be different with everyone.
Will just have to be patient now until I get the exact diagnosis. Take care x

Dear Christel, I was diagnosed with pa about 3years ago. I started with the pa and the psoriasis didn't start till several months later. I say psoriasis but it isn't the usual looking one, mines comes in the form of spots with nasty heads on them. They appear on my arms and legs and sometimes face, and they take several weeks to clear. My problem areas are feet, hands, knees, shoulders, elbows, but generally it is a feeling all over. I hope you get some satisfaction with your diagnosis, but it can take an awful long time to be diagnosed, I spent about 18months before they came to a conclusion. Good luck and I will keep a look out for your posts.

I have psoriatic arthritis without the psoriasis , it is a nightmare , due to the fact that most specialists have hardly any experience of this arthritis the pain and tiredness is the worst , they try and tell you it's all in your head until you talk to other's with this disease and then you find it's par for the course, the best support i have had is from forums x

Hi Christel & Ruth,
Christel sorry I overlooked your reply firstly the P started a few year's after the arthritis mine is red like sunburn some is itchy and other place's are not in fact my arthritis would be the worst problem.

I have been taking methotrexate for 8 or nine yrs but can't remember when I started it I have found that it helped at the start but over the year's it has not been so effective so have had to start a bio- logic which has helped a bit.

How are you? Have you had a diagnosis yet?
Hope you are ok at the moment take care and sorry again for missing your reply.

Hi Ruth,
Glad to hear you have found support here I totally agree with you that doctor's don't understand this disease but a least we all do on here.
In fact they have only discovered in the last few year's that it is actually hereditary so they are still finding out about the disease.
Hope you are well take care Deborah.
