Subject: DLA- good news
I found out on Friday that my DLA is being renewed indefinately. I got higher rate for mobility and lower rate for care again, which Im happy with. Such a relief as it was really worrying me. So nice to get some good news for a change, pain really bad at the moment and so so tired but the news has put a smile on my face :)

Hi Kim, I am delighted to hear that you have been awarded your DLA, I know it is worrying in the economic climate at the moment when all we hear about is cuts.
I receive the same amounts indefinitely, but we hear that everyone is to be re-assesed in 2013 regardless.
I hope a little stress has been lifted for you and your pain gets a little better. I too am suffering from a lot of multiple joint pain, I wonder if this constant damp weather is making us all worse. x
It seems that the stresses of being ill are endless.

Hi kim, I am sure that is a relief I am so glad to hear that you have been awarded this, it gives us all a bit of hope because I am worried at the moment too. I think we all are worried with so many cuts and you never know what is round the corner. As if we have'nt enough to deal with every day without worrying about money etc. But a least this is one bit of good news for a change I am so glad you shared this with us maybe thing's are not as bad as they seem. Iv had dla twice before, each time for 3 years then I had to reapply. Iv got ra and have had for about 10 years, it affects my feet, ankles knees, right hip, neck, shoulders, wrists and hands. I have inflammation, stiffness and pain and my dexterity is getting worse in my hands almost on a monthly basis now. I have alot of trouble walking and yet cannot always use walking aids due to pain in my arms and shoulders. So getting the higher rate for dla has been a god send for me as its meant I can get a car on the motability scheme, so I can get my kids to school and nursery! I forgot to mention I also have inflammatory bowel problems which on top of the ra make me feel very unwell all the time. Apart from all that Im fine!

Thanks for your comments. I think the weather has something to do with all of our problems but to be honest my main trigger is stress. As soon as I get stressed my body just goes loopy and my bowel problems get worse and my joints hurt so much. Im grateful that I have two young children which force me to get out of bed in the mornings and get going. I wake up very early to take my steroids which help me alot and then start with the painkillers as soon as possible. I dont know about you but I have to deal with things one day at a time as I dont know how Im going to be from one day to the next. Im determined that this horrible disease will not beat me though!
I hope this miserable weather improves soon and we all feel the benefit!

I have high Mobility and like you could not live without it. I live 10 mins away.from the nearest town so if I.don't have a car it means I can not go no where just stay in the village and stuck. Can I ask if any have worked for you so you are in remission as they say or you not ther? Xxx

My ra has not gone into remission yet, I wish it would though! The steroids help me get through each day but my crp and esr levels are still too high despite being on the prednisolone. Im still waiting to fully recover from shingles before taking my next dose of cimzia, unfortunately so far all that has done for me has made me ill!Im seeing my consultatn monday so will see what he says. What about you, is your ra in remission? It seems with me that every time they think its almost under controi it flares up again!

hi i have just been turned down for dla,i have been getting high rate mobility for the last 2 years and it was up for renewal,what gets me down is the pain i am having now and the shorter distance i can walk before getting extreme pain and discomfort in my feet,heels and ankles is alot worse than when i aplied 2 years ago, i have psoriatic arthritis in most joints but it mainly efects my feet,i also have acute platar fasciatis and achilles tendonitis,i have been to my gp today and he was very shocked about the dwp decision and told me to appeal and he would support me,so reading kims success has made me feel better about doing so,it seems so unfair tho we have enough to deal with without fighting for a little help never mind i will wait on there dessision again thanks for any advice in advance sandra

Hi, Please could I have some advise from anyone on here. I have suffered from a combination of pa and ra for about seven years now and have never claimed anything before but am now considering trying to claim DLA.
Like most of you I dare say I have good and bad and very bad days At the moment I can't walk more than a couple of steps without acute pain and can't lift my arms because of pain in my shoulders, I feel exhausted through lack of sleep due to the pain and am feeling down and tearful.
Sometimes though I feel fairly good and can walk a few hundred yards without too much pain, if I were to claim for DLA and had to have a medical when going through a "good patch" I'm sure I would be rejected and would feel like a fraud.
Do you think I should try and how should I go about it? Do I need a letter from my consultant or GP?

hi Marie , think you would get DLA if you applied , normal seems to be higher mobility & lower rate care , they dont allways give it first time would recommend you get some help like CAB, occupational therapist or Rhummy Nurse , they will want a professional contact anyway gl with it

Hi everyone
I do not understand why some people are given dla and others arent, I know of one person who claims it for their child who has adhd and gets the higher rate which I find hard to swallow yet other people who have very limited mobility are turned down. When I filled in my form I filled it in as if it was m worst possible day in terms of pain, stiffness, fatigue and was completely honest as when the pain is at its worst I dont leave my bed/chair let alone the house and I stressed how much I rely on my motability car even on my good days as when my pain is tolerable I still cant walk too far as it impacts on me the following day.
I would definately appeal for those who have been turned down initially but make sure you get advice from cab beforehand.

I was so pleased to get DLA last year it has been a great help as my arthritis has become worse. I had a full hip replacement in March which I really thought would help but it has just made the arthritis in other joints worse and I'm now on sick leave from work. I had to re apply for DLA last month and have just been refused I don't know what I'm going to do I only got mobility but the extra money helped such a lot.

Thanks Rhona it was really good to read other peoples stories. I have work for 40 years played hockey at county and national level which is what probably caused the arthritis, never claimed anything before in my life never even had more than a few days off work until the op so I was gutted. Have written a snotty letter will keep you all posted.

hi just to update i was refused dla when i tried to renew so i apealled and had to go for a medical well 10 days later got good news my apealed was succesful now been awarded high mobility and low care,so it shows you have to apeal sandra

Had letter last week following my letter to them regarding claim for DLA being refused, just saying they were going to revue all my evidence (whatever that means) the thing is just living with this condition is a struggle without all this,I only ever got mobility but that paid for someone to drive me the 12 miles to work as I can't walk from the nearest car park.
It's given me great encouragement to carry on knowing sandra got hers. Onwards and upwards I say.

Got a letter last week telling me that although I had disputed the decision, my DLA claim has been refused. I am gutted they say I can walk more than 50 metres unaided, I can just about do it on my elbow crutch, climb stairs,which I can't and feed myself(this is true)I only ever got mobility allowance but this meant I could take someone with me to hospital, which is for me a 70 mile very painful round trip after which I can't stand, or to see my consultant who is a 140 mile round trip away. I live in Argyll 12 miles from the nearest shops a ferry journey from any clothes shops and I just can't manage on my own. I have gone back to work and am refusing any further treatment because I just can't afford to go across to the hospital (I'm not on any benefits so don't get any help). I am trying so hard to be positive and luckily I'm going through quite a good spell at the moment. I won't be appealing I'm to tired of fighting this system, I just wish they would ask to see people surely thats the best way to sort out the genuine from the dodgers.
Sorry to moan just had to get it off my chest.

hi Margaret , I would go to the CAB to get they to help with an appeal , or if you are going to try again like Rhona said , get some one like the CAB to help with the forms , lot of us varies from day to day where we cant walk from room to room & some time have better days

Thank you all so much for your kind words and encouragement.
Been sitting with my head in my hands for a few days. My daughter has found me a phone number for a welfare officer at the council who has been employed specifically to deal with DLA claims and appeals as we have had so many in Argyll. I do'nt know whether to go for it or not sometimes you feel like a fraud. I can walk with my crutch it hurts but I can do it, I can prepare a meal, I do work but all these things are painful and tiring,and I can't climb stairs drive any distance bathe or even sit for any length of time without needing to be helped up. I put all this on my original form and got DLA for 12 months why should things be any different now just because I've had one hip replaced? I feel like an old car fix one bit and another packs up. Trouble is I'm a firm believer in getting on with it and I don't trouble the medics as much as perhaps I should. I will ponder on it for a few more days and then maybe give them a ring.
