Subject: Grandmas old-fashioned arthritis remedies

I am interested in old-fashioned remedies for arthritis, remedies that use household ingredients.
I wonder if anyone has or uses an old remedy for arthritis relief.

Marlene, I have to agree, it's something I use regularly to ease my back. I have PsA and fibro. I tried cider vinegar but it tastes too bad for my delicate palate.

The best Product out on the market right now is Amwell"s Ameripure MSM.. I have been taking this product since 2005 and have been pain free since. Not sure if it can be called Grandma's remedy but MSM is all natural. I had arthritis in my neck from years of being with UPS and FEDEx and develop knee, ankle and foot pain. I no longer have either.I thank God for this product and tell everyone about it..Take care

I have been reading about the MSM - there are lots of claims that it helps the intestinal lining - if that was the case then it could help with leaky gut and prevent the trigger for flares,
you can by supplement in uk stores. - it is also in some foods (cabbage, kale, onions) - I saw an interesting video a few weeks ago where a lady added lots of sulphur foods to her diet to help her ms (related to paleo diet) -

I am going to take this thread back to the old fashioned remedy. Hope no one minds but it seems like the thead is going in a different direction. I asked older relatives what did you use. My aunt used powder mustard mixed with water and rubbed on her knees she said it worked great.Ummm not sure on this one. The other remedy everyone talks about is camphur oil don't know the spelling it seems it cured everything LOL.Take Care all.

Hi Marlene,

I have heard of the mustard remedy. Not sure if it works. I think that the theory behind it is that its hot so it will warm up arthritic joints? Has anyone one else heard of this?

Marlene speaking of remedies that cure everything (except arthritis perhaps) my grandma absolutely swore by Fuller's earth. Has anybody else heard of this? I'm not sure what it is but I remember through experience that it sticks to you like clay!

Hi Jayne, I think people would put mustard in a basin of warm water and steep their feet in it, i think it was a cold remedy but perhaps it helped arthritis as well, not sure.

Hi Rhona,
I have been digging a little bit and found mustard plasters. They were used to treat inflammation and arthritis. Marlene's aunt knows her stuff!

Has anyone ever heard of a cabbage poultice? You bruise the leaves to make them juicy then wrap them around the aching joint and cover lightly with a gauze bandage and leave it (pun intended)overnight.

Speaking of grandma's and poultices, my nan had a big patch of comfrey in her garden. She had RA and would regularly wrap the crushed comfrey leaves around her poor knees.

Apperantely Ginger is good for circulatry probs and alot of people swear by Turmeric...Turmeric can be used in your cooking or you can take it in a capsule form...When I feel unwell I take a 1/3 tsp in my warm milk with honey its really soothing when you feeling run down and sore...Ginger I use alot in my cooking just garnishing finally sliced at the very last moment, aswell as using it in tea...just steaping a couple of slices in hot water with a few mint leaves for a good 5 minutes...Mustard compress sounds good too, I may try that on my mum shes like me she will try almost anything if it sounds reasonable enough:)

Has anyone tried the potato juice remedy for arthritis? Apparantly you leave a peeled and cubed raw potato to soak overnight and drink the water. It's supposed to reduce inflammation.

Does anyone else have any old remedies?

Hi JayneN
I have a strong interest in this area (as I am sure my gut health and balance is key to preventing the frequency of my flares) and would like to add a couple more to the list that have been linked to helping arthritis. Some of the ones already listed are thought to have antibiotic properties.
- Rosehips
- Oregano oil (strong natural antibiotic)
Then perhaps not grandmas....But maybe in Asia..
- Amla (Indian gooseberry) I just bought some yesterday :-)
- Tamarind
The potatoes juice one sounds interesting - as it is highly alkaline and should intefere with bacteria that prefer acidic environment! Warning however is that some people might already be overly alkaline, so people will need to be selective deepening on there own conditions.
Great thread...thanks!

Hi Sean,

Is your Oregano oil used as an aromatherapy oil, maybe added to the bath?

Rosehips sound good, I don't know if anyone remembers Delrosa, the baby Rosehip syrup drink? Nice taste but took the enamel off babies teeth if it was too strong. How would these be administered?

I love that you put the science behind the old-fashioned remedies, it kind of expains why they work in modern terms, thanks for that.

I remember Delrosa, my three children grew up on it. Those were the days you took the kids to the local clinic for all the Jabs and medical checks. You came out armed with orange juice delrosa farleys rusks and all sorts for next to nothing. Those days have truly disappeared.
I grow lots of herbs and most of them have some healing factors I am told so I am going to look them up on google and will let you know if any are good for Arthritis.
I grow fresh Oregano does this work the same as the oil????

I tried the potato juice for a few days in the past but found it alittle difficult to take, I can take the most potant stuff at times, too much starch in potato juice kinda put me off, maybe if I stuck with it it could have helped me too...I was reading about detoxing, Tamarind is supposed to be very good to decalcify the brain apperantley...we use Tamarind quite abit in our cooking for its sweet n our state, unaware of its healing properties...Amazing!...Sean, how and in what form are you using the Amala, Amala berries?

Has anyone read up on or tried Heavy Metal detox?

I've taken amla fruit recently on the recommendation of some Indian colleagues then some other of my co-workers pitched in with tamarind - I made a chutney with the amla and some rhubarb over the weekend and tamarind juice in to a chicken curry.
I am not expecting anything too miraculous it is really just to maintain a good digestive tract - with the aim of protecting myself from future flares.
The oregano oil thing I read about last week when JayneN asked about others - I have not taken but for me it looks to have some real valid science behind it as a natural antibiotic - particularly against Streptococus and Klebsiella both of which are implicated as triggers for PsA and my AS respectively. So when this flare I am currently fighting subsides I might try to kill off some of the nasty Klebsiella bugs in my gut with a regular dose of oregano oil - Incidentally I take a regular zinc supplement to combat mercury from my body from amalgam fillings!

Sean: Pickled Amla is a very common addition to an Indian meal, again u'r told its healthy but why has never really been explained;)...I mentioned Heavy Metal Detox because alot of people believe that these metals are the cause of most Arthritic illnesses and thing like Autism etc...I've written out afew very basic smoothies and drinks if taken on a daily basis will help to expel the metals from our bodies...I've starated on one myself...what have we got to lose but pain?...They'r safer than the other methods...if anyones interested let me know I'll post a thread on here...

Hi, saw your question re Fullers Earth. This is a product used by beauticians as an ingredient for face masks. It can probably be bought over the counter, maybe in Boots, or Sally salon services. It comes in a powder form.

Hi Sandie,
My grandma swore by it for nappy rash. It works a treat! She just mixed it with warm water to a paste and spread it on! I didn't think it was available anymore. I am going to be a first time grandmother in August and would love to get some of this for my grandson, just in case.
