Subject: erosive osteoarthritis

I have just been diagnosed with erosive OA also called inflammatory OA. My GP thought I had RA and referred me to a rheumatlologist. I developed sudden pain and swelling in both hands, I can't hold or grast anything, swelling and stiffness for at least and hour or more in the morning, then unable to do basic movement through the day. I have had this for the past 4 weeks, I am on Tylenol 3 and Ibuprofen 600mg 3 times a day, this isn't working. The rheumatologist didn't suggest any other meds, and provided little info. I was so happy at first that I didn't have RA. But now what do I do?

Marilyn, make a fuss , ibuprofen is not the best anti-inflammatory drug around , there are lot better ones & you should be on them

glucosamine & cod liver oil will help you + oruvail gel on the joins , but go back & get the doctors to give you some better anti-inflammatory drug

Thanks Collin; I have been looking online for more info; apparently Erosive OA is a rare form of OA and mimics symptoms of RA (without positive bloodwork). My family are rejoicing that I don't have RA, but they don't realize my pain and inability to do anything hasn't changed. I have so many questions; how long will the flare up last, how often will I have flare-ups. I will be talking with my GP on Mon re: other meds, and I will visit the health food store re the supplements you suggested. Thanks for responding Collin. If something has worked well for others please respond.

Hi Marilyn, if your pain meds are not helping you need to tell your gp. I have OA and to begin with they gave my paracetamol. I am now on Tramadol and co-dydramol. You don't need to suffer. I wish you well and hope you get sorted soon. Take Care!!

Thanks for the info Marlene; I'm still trying to become as informed as I can on this disease (thank God for the internet). The rheumatologist prescribed hand braces, I'm getting them tomorrow.
