Subject: Swollen fingers

Hi all. This is my first post on here so I'd just like to firstly say 'Hello'. Over the past six months or so the first and second fingers on my left hand have started swelling in the evenings until I can hardly bend them. They stay like that overnight and until the next morning when they gradually return to almost normal ( when I can just about make a fist with them). The doctor has diagnosed OA and put me on Lansoprazole and Naproxen. These seem to have made no difference whatsoever. I've now finished the initial course and my doctor has proscribed another course of the same. My fingers don't really hurt as such unless, of course, I try to bend them when they're swollen.
Has anyone had anything similar out there? And if so what have their expeerinces been? I'd really appreciate your views. Many thanks.

Hi Tony, welcome. OA finger joints present exactly as you describe. Can I ask what you do for a living, it could be that this may put a strain on the joints and this is why in the evenings when you rest the joints swell. Unfortunately there is no cure for OA and your GP has done what he can.
The best thing for the pain is a painkiller and rest. If you google OA of fingers you should find gentle excercise to do. Try to take care of your hands gentle massage with a hand cream can sooth. There is also a wax treatment I find helpful. Also found on google, not cheap but what is?? Tony I hope this helps you a little take care and most of all keep smiling. Best wishes.

Many thanks Marlene, and also thanks for the helpful tips. I drive a minibus at the moment, and before that mainly did clerical work (I'm now 58 and semi-retired). I do find the 'wear and tear' cause rather odd when one considers that only two fingers are affected on my left hand when I am, in fact, right handed. I'll look up the exercises and wax treatment you mentioned. Thanks once again.

Oa is a very odd thing. I have wear and tear in my left shoulder left wrist and knucles and pips and dips (finger bones) I am also right handed.
I do have OA in many other places but it is strange as my ride side is less affected.
I hope your fingers will calm down a bit when the warmer weather comes.
I do try to get a two week break in the winter on the warm Canary Islands, it helps me get through the long cold damp months we get.I would love to spend the whole winter there but my hubby is not retired yet.
Take Care.
