Subject: Prednisalone ?
Hi, Is 10mg a lot as a "maintainence" daily dose of steroids. Usually take 4mg daily, but been on 10mg for flare up. Wondered if it would be ok to take 10mg over a long period. Thanks x

Hi Em, my consultant tries to get me down as far as possible. Usually, I increase for a flare for several days then drop down slowly back to usual dose. I have been up to 3 weeks on 12.5/10mg but then drop back to 5mg.

Hi Em, I have been taking prednisolone constantly for two years! Firstly at 30mg for many months and have now managed to reduce them to 10mg daily. I think 10 mg is still a fair old amount for us to take but sometimes we need them and what is the option really. Until we find a dmard or anti tnf/biologic that suits us steroids are all we have to reduce the pain and inflammation :-) I now make sure that I take a good calcium/vitamin d etc supplement (such as Osteo@@re to safeguard against osteoporosis and have my eyes checked regularly every six months. Take care Patricia x

Hi I have been taking 25mg of prednisolone daily for about 3 years now. I have to have a bone scan once a year and take calcium tablets but I find its the one medication that keeps me just about moving! I tried to reduce and the pain was so bad I had to increase again.

Hi, I am really pleased with your reply's to my question about steroids. I was worried about being on 10mg for a month and hearing that some take a lot higher dose for longer makes me think that it is ok. I too can't get much ease with DMRDS at the moment. Best wishes to all my new arthritis friends. x

Hi, the only steroids I get is the jab that the rhumy gives me, and that has just been the three. My rhumy said right off the bat that she said being on steroids long term was not a good idea as they were harmful (that was her medical opinion) every one is different, I do find they help me, but she said she did not want me to be dependant on them. If they help you and they are monitoring everything and the doctor's and doing what they can to monitor the side effects then try not to worry to much. Every doctor has a different opinion on them. My cousin has Lupus, and she has been on steroids since she was 18 she is now 31. and the doctors have decided now to take her off them, she lives in East Anglia. Again if they help, and the doctors are closly moinroting you, try not to worry, easier said then done I know. Speak to the doctor if it helps and see what they have to say. Hang in there and take care xx

r - sorry for the late reply. I would say the only side effects I get from being on a high dose is, it is difficult to control my weight, my stomach feels distended after food, I used to find it fairly easy to stay slim but it has been a challenge over the past 2 years. Also when I reduce the dose (which I try to do as much as poss until a flare up) it plays havoc with my skin. But overall it has given me my life back so happy to continue for a while longer or until I finally start on Humira.
