Subject: swollen neck glands
Hi all. Today i have swollen glands on my neck which are very tender to touch and hurt when i move my head. They are on both side but worse on my left side. One part is really swollen just under and behing my ear. I went to my gp this morning who said it was laryngitis,my throat is slighty sore and my voice is a little hoarse. I asked if it had anything to do with me taking sulphasalazine and he said no. But i have been looking online and found that it could be to do with this. I have tried to speak to my rheumy nurse but was told that she isnt there and will phone me back Monday. Has anyone else experienced this? i just dont know if i should keep taking the sulpha. my temperature has been between 37.6 and 38.2 This is my third week of taking sulpha and currently take 2 in the morning and one in the evening. Any advise would be much apreciated.

Hi Mike, I have been on sulph. for over 11 years and had no problems with them but i suppose everyone reacts to different drugs in different ways. It would be a shame to stop them as they will help your condition and i think it may be that you would have had the infection even if you weren't on them. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Mike, In your circumstances I would ring the hospital and ask them to page the on call rheumatologist who will then ring you back and you can ask about the sulpha.

Hi all thanks for your replies. I have been to see a different GP this morning as I haven't got any better and he says it is Tonsillitis and has gave me so penicillin, I also have conjunctivitis which I have drops for, The senior rheumatologist nurse has also phoned me as I left a message for her on Friday. She said to stop taking the sulfasalazine until I have finished the penicillin(a week). Oh and the GP also took bloods as I haven't had it checked since I started on the sulfa (3weeks). I just hope it all clears up soon and I can get back on the sulfa and start feeling better from it. In the last 6-7 months I have had two ok weeks, the rest I have felt awful. Also going on a stag do in Spain n Thursday. I hope I can have a drink it doesnt say on the penicillin leaflet that I should avoid alcohol.

Hi Mike, Sorry to hear that you have tonsillitis, at least the penicillin should clear it up and hopefully you will feel better by Thursday and be able to enjoy the stag do, at least you should get some nice sunshine and that alone should make you feel better, that's if you see any of the sun lol. I know people that have taken alcohol with antibiotics but i think it lessens the effect of them but it would probably be safer phoning the pharmacy and the pharmacist should be able to keep you right. Have fun. x
