Subject: Feeling strange

HI All,
Was diagnosed with RA last October, which came on very suddenly, almost overnight in fact. Went to A and E with severe pain in my wrist which I thought I had broken or something, and within a week it was both wrists, which my own GP quickly diagnosed as RA. I was seen very quickly at RA clinic and am now on methotraxate, steroids and all the rest of it! The pain has almost gone and apart from some stiffness and tightness, I guess I am very lucky. However some days I feel quite strange, and cant quite describe the feeling. Is this the drugs or the RA? Does anyone else have these strange feelings?

Hi Lorraine
Thanks for your reply. I too had a bad flu about six months before getting the RA. Never felt right up until my wrists swelled up and got the bad pain. Wonder if there is any connection? Its very hard to find words to describe these weird feelings, but I guess its better than suffering the pain. Reading some of these posts on here makes me realise I have got off very light, although my GP says I most certainly will get flare ups in the future. Do you?

i was on sulfasalazine for the past 9 years they were good took 6 a day didn't get any flare ups until the last year i was on it , i had a really bad one everything was stiff, painfull i couldn't move got really depressed i couldn't get an appointment to see the Rhummy Doctor and my GP didn't do anything i had to phone myself and pleaded with the nurse at the hospital for an appointment. when i saw the consultant he said my tablets were not working anymore so put me on the MTX i have been taking it since October 2011 and fingers crossed i am improving all the time , i worry about side affects but it is a catch 22 if i don't take them i am house bound and you are always questioning if any syptoms you have are the tablets or just not

I often feel anxious and uncomfortable before I get a flare up with my arthritis.
My ra was triggered by the hep b vaccine, like you it started in my wrists then spread like wildfire throughout my body, nearly ten years later Im still trying to get my meds right! I was on nsaid's for a while but they caused me stomach problems (which they thought was chrons!)Im now on anti tnf's co codamol, metho and predinoslone every day. If I dont take the tablets I would be in bed permanently so I think the side effects of the meds have to be better than that!

Now that you mention hep b vaccine, I was in Australia to visit my daughter who had just given birth. When we were over there, the Ozzys had a programme whereby everyone in contact with a new baby had to have a whooping cough injection. My husband and I duly got ours, and my arm was extremely painful for a week afterwards. We arrived home on the Thursday, after being out there for two weeks. On the next morning, my right wrist was extremely swollen and painful. This was the start of my RA. I wonder if like you, Kim, was mine triggered by that injection?

Hi Elaine

I was told by my very switched on gp what mine was definately triggered by the hep b vaccine and my symptoms appeared two weeks after my jab. I got talking to a pharmacist and she said it is quite common for "live" vaccines to trigger an inflammatory disease especially if you are genetically predisposed to have it (asthma/ra/ms in your family). Apparently it's to do with the additives they put in the vaccines. In America and parts of europe there have been several big lawsuits with regards to this and lots have people have won. I was starting to look into it but it seems its extremely difficult to get enough proof. I had probloems after having my bcg, they didnt think it had worked so they gave it to me again so I wonder if that may have triggered something.

Hi Elaine and Kim
Just read your posts I started with the symptoms of r/a about 4weeks after having the swine flue jab that was just over 2years ago my gp and rheumy said that it was just a coincidence. But I'm not convinced I had no problems before that. I'm glad someone else seems to see a connection
Take care .Teresa

Interesting posts about jabs and RA. I had RA already when had swine flu jab but did have a much worse reaction than normal flu jab.

Just for information, one of the symptoms of RA is 'flu like symptoms.' Thought I had flu for about 4 months before I went into a full blown flare and ended up in hospital. Kept telling my friends with young children to stay away in case I had swine flu! (it was about that time when people were getting it.) Don't think it was flu but RA but you don't know for sure - except had quite a bit of joint pain the previous autumn and pain on walking.

Just think they don't know that much about the cause. My thoughts are there is definitely a hormonal cause, due to age that a lot of women get it (menopausal) and relationship with some women and pregnancy.
