Subject: Should I do exercise?

I had a knee replacement exactly one year ago I have since joined a gym doing gentle exercise I also suffer from severe back pain due to arthritis. Is it beneficial to use bicycle in gym or should I just do gentle exercise on motorised chairs only? Please help

As you know arthritis is a very variable condition and affects people very differently even if they have the same clinical symptoms. Exercise is thought to be very beneficial for people even if they have had joint replacements but this has to be monitored by health professionals who actually know you and your condition. I would contact the hospital where you had your replacement or maybe your GP and talk through what you are wanting to do. They will be in a position to give you specific advice about what you should do and what you shouldn't do.

Best of luck with your exercise programme - I hope it helps...

Hi Wilson, I agree with Trina about speaking to the hospital. I don't know where in the country you are but here in Scotland you can make a self referral to a physiotherapist at the hospital. I would speak to them and see what exercises they think you should do, swimming is usually gentle on the joints. You could speak to the staff at the gym and see what exercises that they recommend, just don't overdo it.
