Subject: PA, inflammation and effects of long term Naproxen?
Hi, I have Psoriasis and Arthritis and am being treated with Naproxen. I read that Naproxen and other NSAID's can have a bad long term effect on the liver and kidneys, so I tend to have frequent holidays from them. Even when the joint pain doesn't keep me awake at night, it's a big downer but I'm not keen on ingesting chemicals that damage my organs. One of the big questions puzzling me is whether the inflammation itself causes the joint deterioration and swelling?
If so, does this mean that the anti-inflammatory drugs prevent the physical deterioration of the joints?
If they actually do prevent the damage rather than just minimizing the inflammation and pain, it would give me more incentive to take them regularly, so please advise me on this.

Mike some of the newer NSAID's are kinder on stomach & + like Sulfasalazine you can get Enteric-Coated Tablets Naproxen as general rule they are pretty good compared to the methotraxate / steriod & unti-tnf drugs for side effects & if you get on with them its good

Thanks Colin, I've only had Naproxen prescribed so far. I don't seem to have any trouble with it as far as my digestive system is concerned. I did read that the long term effects (10 years) can be destructive of vital organs, so I'm a bit wary. Mike
