Subject: arthritis drugs, pergnancy and diabetes
Hello I'm new here, I really am looking for some advice or personal experience regarding arthrits medication and concieving. I'll give you a little background about my health. I am 25, had arthritis for 3years now and managed to cope with it only using lodine (anti-infl) but it seams to have taken a turn for the worse and my consultant is positive that I should start sulfasalazine(which i'm not sure of because of the problems it causes with fertility). I also have had type 1 diabetes for 15 years - and although now well controlled I am now experiencing nueropathy problems in my eyes and toes, probably form poor control when I was a teenager! Physically I feel drained, after a few hours work, which I think is hard for family members to underdstand, I am begining to feel a bit of a burden on my family - i was always so independant, but now totaly rely on them. I am getting married next year and dream of having a big family, so does my partner (weather i could cope with even one little kiddy is another thing..) I would like to hear from anyone who has taken sulphalazine and got pregnant succesfully and or anyone who has type 1 diabetes and arthrits. appologies for the moan, just don't know anyone else to speak to.

Your symptoms might be a result of Lyme Disease. Test via IGeneX.

Hi Lindsay, I am sorry to hear you are having this worry. My daughter has type 1 diabetes and I know that can be difficult enough to control without having arthritis as well. I take sulphasalazine but I am sorry that I can't advise on it's effect during pregnancy. I have heard that often during pregnancy the symtoms of RA can lessen. Perhaps you should try it so that when you get married you will feel well and when you are thinking of starting a family speak to your rheumatologist and diabetic doctor to find out the best way to go and what drugs are safest, if any. I hope it all works out for you. I know some of the girls on here have had children and arthritis. Take care. x

Hi rhonda, Lyme Disease has caused Type 1 Diabetes, Ceoliac and psoratic arthritis in my family as a result of Lyme Disease. Lyme Disease induces the immune system to create inflammation. I wasn't bitten by a tick but caught the disease inutero from my mother who was bitten by a tick as a teenager. Symptoms are resolving with antibiotic treatment. IGeneX perform most accurate Lyme test.

Thank you Lauranne for your information on Lyme disease. I would like to point out that this is a UK forum and testing for Lyme disease would usually be done through the NHS. The company you mentioned 'IGenex' is US based and therefore not available or appropriate to arthritis sufferers in the UK. Anyone concerned about Lyme disease should see their GP
