Hi gill

I was recently diagnosed with RA and seeing the nurse on the 28th of this month to start methotrexate so we will be on this journey together. There is a search facility on the board (top right) and if you type in methotraxate you can find posts on this forum about it. I am trying to keep an open mind about the side affects but if you think the info leaflet in a pack of paracetamol has a lot of warnings/information. Obviously the nurse will be able to explain more and I will be asking about a tip that has been repeated here several times about taking half dose in the afternoon and the rest in the evening to ty and sleep through any side affects. Hopefully we will be the type that does not get side affects but heart goes out to all who are and having a rough time. ps there has been as many stories on here about folks that have been fine as much as there has been about folks getting very bad effects. Best wishes

Hi Guys,
I was diagnosed with RA in my hands, fingers and wrists at the beginning of January, and I battle bipolar as well. I know you have read a post i have put on here, and all i can say is this. Give it a try. It was what the majority of people try before anything else. You are closely monitored on this before you start the meds, you have full blood count, and a chest x ray, and you will be asked if you have had a flu jab and the pneumonia jab, and it will be recommentded that you have them. It is the dr that will decide what dose of mtx they will start you on, tell them what you would be willing to start off with, I started on 15mg, and it is a moderate dose. You have bi weekly blood tests, which if they are happy with the results go to monthly from then on. The dr may add others to it like hyrochrolqueine or something. Know you are scared, i was pretfited, some have bad effects, some have none, it is trial and error. They like to try this first before they move on. Hope that helps, hang in there both of you, not much further along the road than you, it is tough getting your head around the diagnosis, and what happens next, there is a lot of support here and when you read others stories it makes you feel less alone. The NRAS is really good, and they have a really good helpline, and that I would also recommend. I have had good support from here too, and that has been invlauable. Sending you both warm thoughts. Lots of luck, and let us know how you both get on xx

Hi Gill,

I'm 32, and was diagnosed almost a year ago now. The worst part of the whole thing for me was getting diagnosed (I was a bit doctor phobic and put off going for the tests). Since diagnosis, my experience has been much more postive- though it took a while for the meds to kick in- I am now feeling much better. I am on methotrexate, sulfasalazine and hydroxacholoroquine. No major side effects so far (touch wood). Hang on in there! Hopefully it will work for you too.

Good luck

Hi Gill Took mine Sunday evening. Doing not too bad, same as you a bit of stomach discomfort but a fair bit of burping, think I will try a pribotic drink or yogurt but have GP appt on 13th so will see if I can have something to protect my tummy I had H pylori about 7 years ago and that was the bit that was making me a bit on edge about taking these, but overall ok Hope you don't have your headache for too long take care x

Hi Gill and Paula

Paula I know you are still having problems so sending a big hug xx

Gill How are things going, well I hope? I am feeling well still. Don't know if it is the affects of the steroid injection or the mtx. Had m gp appt this morning, wrote everything down that I wanted to ask which really helped. Have got my repeat prescription for mtx and folic sorted. Have been given Dihydrocodeine 30mg for the cupboard for when I have a severe attack (like the 2 I had, one where I thought I had had a stroke as could not lift my head or arm when I woke up one morning and the other attack was in hand and could not open my hand for 3 days).
Still having tummy probs, constipated Dr asked if that was side effect of mtx and she went to look it up and I said no side affect could be diarrea we both laughed at that as I am opposite. Plus said I did not like the belching and the bloating etc so have gaviscon for the wind ad something to help with the constipation, but from the symptons I said and she examined me I have to go and have a scan on my gall bladder!!!! was surprised about that as said I had not had it before taking mtx. So there you go I thought from this week I was sorted as had arranged my blood tests with the nurse etc and could just get on with life. I am glad though I have bought a prepayment cert as todays lot would have cost me £37.
Apart from that as I said I am well although do seem to have developed a tic of saying "Pardon me" a lot lol.
Take care Paula and Gill x

Hi Paula and Gill

Lol Gill trust me to be different I am on Ispagel to try and make me go!!!! I did my my pre payment prescription by direct debit they take £10.40 a month for 10 months. If you get any more medicines Gil ask for a form F57 they fill it in at the chemist and when you get your cert you can get your money back, you have to ring them and ask for the cert date to be back dated I think they can do 1 month.

Afraid I am off the MTX for 2 weeks I rang the rhumy nurse because I thought they ought to know about this gall bladder thing, considering it is next to the liver and I did not have it before I took the mtx I get the feeling though that they think it is something not connected but I just reiterated I did not have pain in my rib, shoulder and back nor burping and bloating and constipation before I started the MTX. It is a shame as apart from those probs I have been ok on it and I am sure they could have sorted something out to protect my tummy still they are erring on the side of caution. I have my first blood test this Friday so will be interesting to find out the result of that I still have to take the folic acid so obviously the mtx must stay in your system a bit. Hope your tummy sorts out soon Gil and good luck with the physio. xx

Paula I do hope your consultant can sort you out I don't know why your GP can't just ring your consultant and ask if the GP can put you on the steroids. Dear me little liason between them it seems. Take care Paula keep your chin up and lets hope they net 2 weeks go quickly for you xx

Hello everyone this is my first message on this forum although I been reading it for a while.
I am 57 and was told I had RA andOA around 12 months ago,as to cause I had broken 2 ribs and was told that this could have caused the initial flare up, virtually over night I was in such terrible pain in every joint I described it to the GP as a voodoo doll but using daggers.
Just to give a bit of encouragement to the newbies, I have been on methy, hydro and folic, and although I suffered with a few side effects I have found everything fine and am 100% better than I was before, I think you have to just persevere with the meds and give them a chance to work, they have for me.
And do not forget, in the words of monty python ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE.

Hey. Male/28 diagnosed 3 yrs back - tried sulfalazine and methotrexate (didn't get on with either). Started Enbrel 6 months back and it has changed my life - It is a miracle. However, you gotta get the drug that is right for you. There are many treatments out there. Don't be afraid. You'll be monitored and will be given good care. Just think if you had this condition living in the 3rd world. Do you research but don't read to far in depth (especially when it comes to side effects of the drugs. My Dr said to look at the side effects of Paracetamol, shocking really). Good luck.

Hi gill,
Bless your heart, the folic acid may be the way to go at the mo maybe, mine was upped to 10mg, the gp has to prescibe mtx but can only get it if I take mtx booklet to the GP they check the bloods and then get a prescription. So in a couplle of weeks go back again, and then back to the rhuemy. The book is at the proof readers, be happy when I see this thing in print, still on the mtx has been lowered to 10mg, but she is looking at slufazone, and no things have not levelled out, but tomorrow is a new day so see what happend. Take care Gill, thinking of you x

Hi Jon,
Thanks for advice, I am not monitored all that well and to be honest not impressed with the care at my local trust which is something PALS are looking at, I do not look at the side effects for anything, one drug works for one another one doesnn't I have that kind of approach. Hope you hanging in there and thanks for the tips xx

Hi Guys

Sorry not been on a while but lots of things have been happening.
Now back on mtx and have built up to 15mg got to go up to 20. My abdominal scan came back clear..wow when they said abdominal scan I got the full works, liver, stomach, gall bladder, intestines, spleen and kidneys so was nice to walk away with a clean bill of health, not often you can have that degree of health check. Remarkably I have had no symptons since going back on no tummy issues at all..I wonder if the mtx was such a shock to my system but recognised it second time around. My blood tests must be ok as have had no come back from hospital. I am well no flares at all just have a bit of an achy arm. I have my rheumy nurse appt next week, also had a breast screening appt same week but not same day so begged to change it to day of rheumy appt and they kindly did that yayyyyy.

The other news Is I became a Grandmother on the 8th April. He is a beautiful little boy and he has given our family a much needed lift as my Husband had a heart attack on the 18th March. It was a severe one but he has survived and is expected to make a good recovery. Felt like a pair of old crocks last saturday filling our pill boxes up lol I am only 54 and hubby 51. So to be honest at the moment the right arm does not know what the left one is doing except to say I now seem to know the inside of Lincoln Hospital very well.
Sorry to hear you are having side effects Gill and hope the folic helps. I think the thing that made my mind up about the mtx was the nurse saying patients 30 years ago were coming in with disfigurements she said you don't really see that now because of the medication.
Paula I know I replied earlier to you but hope you are not in too mch pain at the moment , if you are sending a healing hug.

Hi Gary,
I am sorry to hear that you are in so much pain, i know how you feel as i have rheumatoid arthritis. Has your doctor told you what type of arthritis it is? as there is so many different types and they all respond to different treatments. I think you should go back to your doctor as there has to be something more effective to help your pain without making you feel sick, i would ask him to refer you to a rheumatologist or at least a pain clinic as you shouldn't have to put up with so much pain, especially in this day and age. I hope you get some help soon, sometimes a massage can help a bit as it is relaxing and helps to make you sleep, take care and let us know how you get on. x

Hi guys, God!, just lost the whole post I typed:(...I'm just gonna introduce myself tonight and hopefully write further next time...My name is Yasmin, my sister and father have both been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis...My sister was diagnosed a year ago and my father just recently...Like Gill I am also a carer for a few of my relatives, though I am not a RA sufferer but I have been suffering from similar pains throughout my body for the last few years...My father also suffers from Diabetes...He has been placed on Folic Acid and Methotrexate a couple of months ago and his dose has been increased steadily to 25mg but a yet it has made no difference to his pain or the swelling of his fingers and hand...He is finding it very difficult to be active any more and remains bedridden throughout the day...Reading through all your posts I have tremendous respect for you all...I am hoping I can learn from you in regards to how you maintain your daily lives and activities and how I can carry on to help my father have a reasonably active life too...at this moment in time I am stuck on how to get him to use his hand as he won't even move it from one place to another...Will be seeing the specialist again on MOnday morning hoping to ask for anything else that may help with the pain and swelling that will get him to at least use his hand alittle...Speak to you soon guys...For Gary, as hard as it is my friend, don't resist the pain, resisting only increases the pain try and feel it, except it and know one day soon it will ease...and it will...AFTER EVERY HARDSHIP THERE IS EASE... Good night my friends have a good nights sleep:)!

Hi Paula, sorry to hear you're having a rough time at mo...Sounds like chest pain due to anxiety...Try and do some deep breathing excerices if you can, they will help to calm your system down...are you on any meds for anxiety? I have two neices both who have been through the mill through mental health problems so I kinda have an idea of what you may be experiencing...I have written my email add you are most welcome if you wish to talk further in privacy...luv and hugs xxx
