Subject: sulfasalazine, methotrexate and prednisalone...anyone else on all three?

Hi all, i have pa and have been on sulfasalazine and prednisalone for the last seven months. Not seen much improvement at all and now the rheumy is starting me on methotrexte tomorrow. I dont know what to expect. Am scared to death about the possible side effects. Had a really bad reaction to hydroxychloroquin a while ago and i really dont want to go through that again. I know its not logical as i havent had any reaction to the sulfa but the methotrexate seems a harsher drug... any advice? xxx

hi Debs , would not worry to much about methotrexate , been on it since 98 with sulfasalazine , was on enbrel for bit & should be going on another anti-tnf soon , to treat RA

only side effect I had with Mtx is raised liver count , but folic acid help control it

Hi Colin, thanks for the reply. Was your liver count very raised on it as my liver counts are abnormal/high on the sulfa which is another concern.
thanks, Debs

Debs , they should do blood test every month , sometimes more often , ALT is what they check for liver , normal around 40 & over 120/130 they may stop it or increase folic acid

its a lot more effective than sulfasalazine , what level of steriod they got you on ?

Hi Colin,
was on 10mg but down to 7.5mg a day at mo. Keeps the inflammation and pain down to bearable. Not reducing anymore though, rheumy said to stay on this until i see him or the rheumy nurse tomorrow. Are you on it too? Personally i dont think the sulfa has worked at all. Still on all the painkillers and steroids i was on before i started it.I am still having monthly blood tests but think it will go up to weekly ones once i start the meth.
