Subject: pain in tail bone

hi, i am just wondering if anyone else ever gets pain at the bottom of the spine, right on the tail bone, I don't know if it's because i've been sitting so much, it is agony and even lying in bed is sore this is the first I have experienced pain there, i have read about a doughnut cushion that helps, has anyone tried this? or any other suggestions, thanks

are you moving about regularly? It's important to get circulation going when sitting for a long time. Try and move every 20 mins, get up and stretch etc. This is my nursing background talking here! In the old days we used to do a 'back round' where we rubbed the pressure points of all patients - including the tail bone, to stop pressure sores developing. No idea what they do now - better mattresses I expect!

hi bsk, i haven't been moving much at all lately and i started worrying about pressure sores when i felt the pain. I have even been finding it very uncomfortable in bed when i lie on my back or try to get up. i am going to get a new bed soon and as you say moving around every 20mins is sensible, thanks again for your help and you look after yourself.xx

thanks Rhona, meant to say it's worth chatting to your gp about it though, just in case there is something else going on. In the meantime, try switching around your sleeping position in bed. Just a thought, you could ring OT department and see if they have anything to help relieve the pressure. That's the sort of thing they provide I think. xxxx

Hi Rhona, I have had dreadful tail bone pain for months. I was sitting on one side of my bottom or the other but never able to sit normal. My gp said it was RA in my tailbone. He suggested getting an U shaped cushion to sit on. I found one on line, was about £12 and its brilliant. It takes all the pressure off your tailbone.

Hi rhona it's funny you mention pain in the tail bone, I had to have mine removed about 4 years before I was diagnosed with PA, at the time they said I must have damaged it giving birth but I didn't have pain until he was about 18 months. I had different treatments including steroids and nerve blocks but they wore off after a couple of months anyway after about 2 years they removed it and it was the best thing everno more pain and actualy being able to sit like a normal person. I have often thought that it was the start of my arthritis but never heard of anyone else with the same problem. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for your reply Annette, i'm not sure what's caused mine, it's possible i could have damaged it the way i have to sit, i can't really bend my knees so i have maybe sat down with too much force or it's the RA or just sitting too long. i have ordered a cushion from ebay that hopefully will make sitting more comfortable, you must have been in agony to have to get it removed. take care. x

Hi Rhona, I too experience pain in my tail bone, I have alot of trouble sleeping because of it, even sleeping on my side ( which makes my hips ache) doesnt help, when I spoke to a specialist about it, I told him I had pain in my lower back, he said it was not in the spine but in the tail bone, another place that is affected by Fibro, sometimes it makes my legs tingle, and my feet feel somewhat numb too. I hadnt thought about a donut to sit on, I will try that.

Hi Anne, i got one from ebay and it is actually called a coccyx cushion. The only problem i have with it is when i sit down it seems to move position perhaps because my seat is a bit soft, it would probably sit better on a dining room chair or desk chair then i would get more benefit from it. thanks for your reply x

hi anne, i should have said in my message above a coccys cushion is not a doughnut cushion, i made a mistake by calling it that. x
