Subject: Stopping Smoking

hi, just thought i'd say that today i went to the stop smoking clinic. my CO level wasn't a high as the lady expected which is good news i suppose. so , the challenge begins and if it helps this RA in anyway then I have to do it.
I'll not doubt bore you all with how I do but here's to patches and hope they work.

Good for you Willis, i stopped 5 years ago and can honestly say i don't miss it at all, the first few weeks are the hardest but with patches or willpower you will do it and there are loads of benefits in stopping. I didn't use anything to stop but i have heard the patches do help. Good luck. x

Hi Willis, good for you!!!! I gave up smoking three years ago. I used Champix its an oral pill you take each day. We gave up as a family Me Hubby Son Daughter-in-law and my Brother. All with Champix we are all still smoke free. I wish you all the luck in the world.
Put some of your ciggi money aside and don't forget to treat yourself.
My first treat came after six months four days break with hubby.
It is tough but you can do it.

Rhona hats off to you also.

Keep us posted willis and let us know how you are doing.

hi guys, well this is day 3 lol day 3 my god you'd think i'd climbed everest or got miracle cure for any Arthritis , but.... still going ... still a struggle I can tell you.. and as daft as it may sound I am already noticing differences. the obvious is not so much out of breath or tight chest. i'm concentrating on that so much i'm now not noticing all the usual aches and pains so much..... i do notice however the sleepless nights continuing :( so hopefully i'll be here again celebrating month 3 :) hope you are all well and the weather isn't winning. personally i'd like to hibernate in winter, i hate winter/s. love to you all xxx

Hi Willis, glad to hear your hanging in there. Like Rhona I can't think of any reason to go back. I stand next to a smoker and I feel mortified to think I used to smell like that.
I like all the money we save as my hubby is an ex also.

Hi bsk, its good that so many off us have posted so Willis can take heart that it can be done. The thing I love to hear also is how no one seems to go back. I think that is because deep down on the whole we are all tough cookies.
Let me just say a big well done to all the ex-smokers, its not easy, but what an achievment!!!!!!

Hi Marlene, it's amazing how many people with arthritis are smokers or ex smokers, i wonder if there is any connection with the disease and smoking. glad you managed to give up the killer weed
and enjoying well deserved holidays. xx

Hi Rhona, can I ask do you smoke?? I don't think smoking is anything to do with why people have any form of Arthritis.I know people with the condition that have never smoked.
When people smoke it is a fact that our bodies don't heal so well.
I think people choose to give up smoking for this reason.
I for one wouldn't say my OA is any less painfull, but I have have other health issues that certainly would be a lot worse by now had i not given up smoking.
Take Care hope this was helpful!!!

Hi Marlene -
Rhona said in previous post she'd given up 5 years ago.
I don't think smoking is in any way responsible for 'causing' any type of arthritis but as you say it certainly doesn't help and maybe it leads to more unwanted or un-needed problems further on in life - that's what made me decide I have to stop - took longer to get better from any tiny sniffle i had. and it's bad to say it but I actually enjoyed it that is what i miss the most. today hasn't been too bad and i try to keep myself busy busy busy all the time or sleep as obviously i can't keep going lol. but i'm looking forward to the day i can not use a crutch (patches etc) and just know that even if only on month 4 I can say I am a non smoker :) house smells nicer, clothes and hair not smelly now - and that is making me realise lots of good reasons to stop :) hope you are well and keep treating yourself all these years on with the money you would have wasted :) xxx

There is a connection between RA and smoking, apparently. Supposed to be one of the factors in development of the disease. How that actually works I don't know and I suspect things are much more complex than that. Haven't read any connection to OA though.

hi all, just a quicky to say still going and sticking with it - had a few hiccups (puffs) but only a few honest. so now 6 days free and feel soooooooo sooooo so much better can't believe it - why oh why didn't i do this years ago???? had visit with clinic today and CO count has gone down from 14 to 4 so that is excellent and keeping me positive. i have to say with having to change my habits i think that and the no smoking has helped RA somewhat too but how major that is i have no idea but can only continue to help by not smoking. I hope you are all keeping ok and not too much in pain. thinkin of you all xxx

Glad to hear you are succeeding Willis, there is a very good book by allen carr on how to stop smoking and he explains that we don't really enjoy smoking we just think we do, what we are really doing is satisfying our addiction. Once the cravings stop it will be so easy. keep it up. PS glad you are feeling better, they do say there is a connection with R/A and smoking. x
