Subject: Can you develop fibromyalgia after rheumatoid arthritis

Hi
Iv had ra for about 9 years and for the past year or so during the night and in the latter part of the day Iv had excruciating pain in most of my joints/areas where I have arthritis but its a different pain. It s like a sharp stabbing pain so severe I literally cant move from the postiion im in, a bit like electric shocks. I find it worse when iv had a busy day. Can someone tell me is this pain due to the arthritis affecting the nerves as iv had it for several years or could it be fibromyalgia? My rheumy is only interested in my blood results i dont get alot of help from him.
I also have really bad fatigue, bowel problems and am not sleeping well and really bad fevers. Any advice would be appreciated!

Anything is possible from you over doing it, to maybe fibromyalgia. Your rhumy doesn't sound very helpful, try talking to one of the nurses or your GP. If I was you I would write a list go to your rhumy and says this is what is happening and I need to know what is going on it is worrying me. The stress caused by all of this is not good for your either and above all you should not be left to get on with it. Take Care.

Thanks for your reply.Do you get pins and needlesas well as actual nerve pain? Im seeing my rheumatologist on 6th Feb and am starting to write a list of everything I want to tell him, hopefully he will listen. He is nice but he does tend to just go by my blood results and vary my meds according to them. Im really hoping I get somewhere as feel like im in limbo at the moment!

yes i get stabbing pains that run down my fingers i get them in my arms and legs but not the lenth of my arm i get it in patchs on my arm if that makes sence. i get pins and needles a lot in haands and feet. i also get the pains in my head and tend to suffer realy bad headachs and migrains. bloods often dont show things up i have had full on flares where my knee would be like a football rhummy would send me for blood test first then i would be wheeled back up to see my speacialist where he can drain the fluid off my knee. last time he drew 4 1\2 syeringes of fluid off yet my blood results came in to say there was no inflamation. yet myself and my rhummy knew there was has he had drained it off. i also was sent into hospital feeling very ill i had a temp but bloods normal in the end they found an infection on my spine.
i also get realy cold feet and there often purple my rhummy thinks it is vasculitis developing caused by all the inflamation iv had. hope i have been some help

Hi All, I was diagnosed with RA few months ago and about 2 months ago they also said I had fibromyalgia. I get pins and needles, shooting pains, even pain if certain areas get pressed. Get really bad headaches and also for few years I have had irritable bowel problems, turns out it was fibromyalgia causing the symptons. My gp has given me antidepressant called nortriptyline to take at night to try and help me sleep and for muscle pain. My gp said having RA and fibromyalgia is not very common.

Thanks so much for your comments. I to have had bowel problems which they thought was crohns disease as they found some inflammation in my ileum, but then changed their mind. I also suffer with menstrual problems as well so Im sure they must all be linked somehow as too much of a coincidence, will be interesting to see what my rheumy says when I see him. Kylee I know exactly what you mean about having patches of pain in your arms as I get the same, really does feel like electric shocks, so painful it takes your breath away. I get pins and needles on the top of my head sometimes as well.

Kylee, have a look at the subject I started about endometriosis and the link with RA. Endometriosis pain when having a period is horrendous. Gillian

Hi Kylee
I have had really heavy periods and not to sound too graphic extremely big clots and also bleeding every two weeks. My gp just wants me to have mirena coil fitted without doing any investigations which Im not happy with so going to try a different gp. I dont like being given a "cure"when they dont know what the problem is!

I spoke to my rheumy who was not in the best of moods and he was not in the best of moods! He said it was just a coincednce that I have all these other sypmtoms and told me to see my gp. He never listens and very rarely looks at my joints, feel like im talking to a brick wall. Im just going to start the cimzia this week and hope that helps with the joint pain and tiredness and go back to my gp about the other stuff.
Hope you're not suffering too much at the moment

im good thanks kim. from the sound of it your rhummy needs some home truths. every appointment i have with my rhummy he will check all my joints check movement and flexability he will also do ultra sound on all joints. he always talks to me and not at me. once when i was realy bad he was out in a meeting i was unable to get to the hospital as i cldnt even get off the sofa. any way 2days later he was passed my message and rang me he said he was very annoyed no1 rang him as he wld of come to the house to see me. when i was pregnant i was struggling i was tired all the time so he decided with my partner they would stick me in hospital for 2 weeks to rest. its good to have some1 that understands dnt get me wrong sometimes i feel im wasting my time but 80% of the time i get results
