Subject: Sleeping with neck pain

Can anyone please give some advise. My arthritis has been giving me severe neck pain which makes sleeping difficult. It gives me bad headaches which often develope onto migrain. Is there any pillows better than others or sleeping positions that are better

Hi Annette, I have been suffering from neck pain for the last few weeks and even my jaw has been sore, i find that i have to use a really flat pillow now and if you could get someone to massage your shoulders and neck this can ease it a bit and perhaps use some voltarol to rub in. sometimes rolling your shoulders backwards but not frontwards helps a bit. I also find sleeping on my back is best and you may have to step up the painkillers when it starts. x

Annette ask your GP for Amitriptyine tablets. I had exactly the same as you 1st neck ache then sparking off a Migraine then being sick with the Migraine. This was happening twice a week and not good for a Diabetic !! The Amies have stopped that now and have been a miracle pill for me. Also I have one of those memory foam pillows that are brill.

Thanks for the replies I will certainly give both pillow ideas a go. Have been to gp and got Tramadol so hoping it will help

Hi Annette,

I have recently bought a water filled pillow from amazon. Though it is very heavy to move, it's great to sleep on, very supportive- might be worth a thought if you get no joy from the other suggestions?

Thanks Sarah I have tried a flat pillow but it didn't help. Have been looking at memory foam pillows but they are very expensive if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for your water pillow and is it a bit cold

Hi,

It wasn't cheap- around £40. It's well insulated so doesn't feel cold at all. I find it suits me as the water redistributes when i put my head on it, so it properly supports my neck. This in turn has stopped my scrunching up when i sleep and has reduced my neck and shoulder pain.
