hi Davina - here goes
obviously had RA for years and didn't realise or just ignored assuming was just 'unfit' lol. after suffering badly for 5 months! family and work colleagues forced me to docs. so in march 2010 was officially diagnosed with sero-negative RA. was put on plaquenil + steroid tabs high dosage and methotrexate low dose and over the weeks had to lower steroid tabs and up the mtx. must admit had instant relief but that i've discovered was the steroids :) since then i've suffered a flare up - thought my time was up as it was worse than i'd felt ever. meds now 200mg a day of plaquenil, 20mg of mtx per week, no steroids :( each day is different but i ache constantly still. today my arm and shoulder are letting me know they not liking me typing this. all in all i am better than i could be i suppose, adjusting to 'new life' has been and ordeal as always did everything at 100 mph in life and now i have slow or stop lol. i am very lucky that work in family business so can do just 3 or 4 hrs a day and celebrate whenever i manage a full day at work -but that is getting less these days. frustration is the biggest problem other than constant pain and/or stiffness as mentally i am fine but body can't keep up. so i finish work early and then have to rest when what i want to do is tidy house, go shopping etc but can't :( . doc and rhuemy nurse are great i have to say. and that's it really , that's my story. I could cry most days but am glad i can sleep all night 3 out of 7 which is an improvement. So, under control (ish) but better than I know I would be without the meds. what about you? xxx

Hi Davina, I have had R/A (sero positive) for over 10 years and for a while i got by on sulphasalazine then methetrexate was added and finally plaquenil, unfortunatley the last few months have been really bad, swollen knees, sore feet and now my hips are sore along with shoulder and other joint pains, my last ESR reading was 95 the highest ever. I am now waiting to start embrel, it is being delivered soon and i hope it works. I had a nice Christmas but i had to do my shopping on-line as i haven't been able to get out so i hope 2012 will be a better year for myself and everyone else. best wishes. x

Hi Davina. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago. At first I was told to take paracetamol every day then I was prescribed sulphasalazine but it affected my liver. I then tried hydroxychloroquine but came out in a rash all over. Diclofenac did the same. Just had a letter to say I missed an appointment just before Xmas but didn't get the letter telling me when the appointment was so I don't know what the rheumatologist will suggest next.
I haven't been taking anything for about 4 months but don't seem to be affected too much now. I started off becoming more and more stiff with painful joints. It was a big blow as I used to run half marathons but now, I am starting to feel that I may be able to go running again.

hi, Davina...wish you all a pain-free 2012.
I have gout and for last 6 years I have it controlled ... although I feel it when the pain is comming back... a tickleing sensation on those gout points... when my joints feel pain, here is what i do that time:
few times a day, I cradle my right elbow (folded) with my left hand and press the crese of my elbow with thumb of my other hand ... I do the same with my other elbow... (in acupresure, they call it "Crooked Pond")
what I read in the Internet, if I press at the crease of my elbow, the brain releases more endorphins. (Endorphin is a natural body painkiller).. I feel some relief...
One have to follow what our GP ask us to do... but I thought, hey, why not try our body's own painkiller... and it works for me...
please do lot of reading before go for any alternative, but I just wish you contain the pain and sleep well every night.
