Subject: wondering about diagnosis

Last week I had a Dr diagnose me with gout. I question the diagnosis since I am a 46 year old female. I had joint pain/swelling develop in my ankles suddenly at night. Since then, I have joint pain/swelling in both thumbs. He did not test me to give me the diagnosis of gout. What would you do to make sure you have a correct diagnosis? Any thoughts?

Hi Ruby,

I would ask your doctor or nurse to do a blood test to confirm it was gout, gout can resemble other arthritic conditions and the treatments all differ, you want to make sure it's the right diagnosis.

Hello Ruby, ask your GP to refer you to a specialist at your local hospital. Blood tests are not always great at giving a diagnoses for all types of Arthritis. Ask for MRI or CT scan on your feet and hands. You may have to keep pushing for this but don't give up good luck and take care.

Hi, when i was first went to my doctor he tested for gout and it was negative even although my ERS was high, so a blood test would let you know if it was gout and if not then a referral to a Rheumatologist would be advisable. My husband has gout and he takes a tablet every day to prevent an attack and he was diagnosed with a simple blood test.
