If you have a crp level of 10mg with RA is that considered high? When I was reading about it,it said in the general population a reading of that level would put you at high risk of cardiovascular disease so i'm feeling a bit scared

Hello Beth, CRP should be 0-5. At times mine has been 84, and todate it varies between 14-20 at every blood test. My doc told me that this can come with RA.(had it 3 years) He said although it "can"put you at high risk of cardiovascular disease, there are other factors to consider that can add to the risk. Like smoking, high cholesterol, high bp etc. I dont worry because I try to live a very healthy lifestyle, and do not suffer from any of the above, although I make sure I am checked regular. I dont drink or smoke either. I believe thats all I can do to help myself. Hope this helps

Don't worry Beth. I've been told that their aim (rheummy team) is to get it to 10 or below. They use this to assess how active your RA is, the higher the readings the more active it will be. Mine started going up earlier this year, reached the dizzy heights of 58 once. I have now started to inject MTX and it is slowly coming down. It was 38 two months ago and my last reading was 18 and I am now feeling much better, even started to cut down my pain killers. Paula

Hi Lynn, No the rhumatoid factor is another test, sometimes used to diagnose RA but some people with RA like myself still show up negative with that. There is a further test to called an ANTI CCP which can be used to help diagnosis. The CRP shows inflamation in the body,as does the ESR but that fluctuates daily where the CRP stays more level so my doc tells me and is a better indicator. Hence it is the CRP that he takes more notice of. Hope this helps.
