Subject: how much folic acid with methetroxate
Hi everyone, sorry to keep asking questions, but does anyone know how much folic acid to take if you take 25mg of methetroxate. when i started methet. i was only taking 10mg and i was told to take 5mg folic acid 3 days after meth. but i think they said to take it for 3 days now that i have increased the dose.

Your best bet is to call your rhumy team to make sure you get your dosage correct. Take Care

Hi Rhona Its really dependant on how you get on with the Methotrexate. When I started it was 1 tablet 3 days after I had Methotrexate but I get really bad nausia with it so I now take 3 tablets 1 a day starting the day after Methotrexate. Probably best to speak to someone on your team though.

Mine is different again as I take one 24 hrs after the dose of meth then another mid week as I was going aneamic. What it shows is that everyone is different so,as suggested, you show contact your rheumy team.

When I first started taking MTX (orally) I was told to take 5mg three days later - MTX Friday - Folic Acid Monday. I was once told by my specialist nurse that it is at it's optimum level on a Monday. I came to the conclusion that that was why I took the folic acid on a Monday to minimize the side effects. I do know that if you are having side effects the first line of defense is to increase the dose. From what I know folic acid reduces the effect of MTX. There was once a thread about how much folic acid and when to take it on the NRAS forum. It did seem that there were lots of variations on how to take it. I've just started injecting MTX done my 8th injection this morning. I know that when you inject it it is straight in your system and none of the dose is lost whilst your body breaks it down. Must say that since I've been injecting it I have felt so much better. But because I am now injecting it it did cross my mind today if I should ask if I should change my folic acid day. I would imagine that now it gets into my system and it's not having to be broken down it would be at it's optimum level straight away. Paula

Thanks everyone for all your help on this, i am not having side effects with the mtx but they keep increasing the dose and i don't think its helping very much, i will continue to take it 3 days after mtx and check again when i am at the clinic, thanks again for all the help on this. xx
