Subject: worried about swollen foot
Hi, I am wondering if anyone else with rheumatoid arthritis has ever had their whole foot swell up, i am getting quite worried as the swelling is all over my foot and my ankle seems to buldge out, i can't fit a pair of shoes on my feet, it seemed to get worse when i went onto lodine tablets, i now have a new anti inflammatory but don't know whether it will help the swelling or not. i have been resting the foot and it is still all puffy. i would be grateful for any advice.

Hi Rhona::) I also also get my feet swelling from time to time, but they tend to go down after a couple of days, they go quite puffy and shoes are impossible to get on. Mine is due to Oedema (fluid retention), you can check to see if it is this by pressing your finger into the affected area and if there is a dent left that takes a while to come back to normal that points to fluid and I don't think that anti-inflammatories help with that. See your GP you may need some diuretics to help reduce the fluid. Take care xx

Thanks Dilizjo for your reply, i just thought it a bit strange that it is just the one foot that is swollen and when i press it does feel like there is a lot of fluid in it. thanks for your advice.

No problem Rhona, if it feels like fluid it is always a good idea to keep it raised as much as you can. Also drinking things like cranberry juice helps as cranberries are a natural diuretic. Take care xx

Rhona, In your shoes (no pun meant ha ha) I would get myself to see a rheumy asap. My knee did that last year and they injected it with steroids and took some fluid off. If it is one foot is more likely to be inflammation than oedema. Having been a nurse I've seen a lot of it!! Can you ring your rheumatologist and see if someone can see you urgently?

Hi bsk, i went to the clinic on tues. to get an injection as i felt so bad, i could hardly walk and i was really quite upset, they asked which joint i wanted injected and i said either my foot or knee, they said i would probably feel more benefit getting it in the knee, they also took fluid from it, they said to come back in a couple of weeks if foot still bad and they would inject it, my foot started to swell after i had been on lodine for a month and was really red so i stopped the lodine, the redness has gone but it is still swollen, the hospital dont think it was caused by the lodine but they have give me another anti inflammatory although i am a bit reluctant to use it just now although i know i will have to soon as the pain is terrible. xx

Hi rhona, I didn't fully appreciate what you had been through. Why are you reluctant to take the anti inflammatory? It might help! I can't take them but wish I could sometimes. Let us know how you get on. xx

Hi bsk, i think it's because i am taking so many other tablets and i checked the internet and found somewhere that it said Naproxen (new anti-inflammatory) can increase the toxicity of MTX, but i will have to take it tonight as today has been quite a bad day and it was only 3 days ago i got the injection into my knee. thanks agan for taking the time to reply. xx

Make sure you get your bloods done in that case. Sounds like you should go back with your ankle. best of luck. x
