Subject: MTX and Anti-TNF

I took myself off MTX 2 months ago as was on for 8 months, felt no real improvement.

Due to go on Humira soon, but been told that I HAVE to go back on MTX (injections) otherwise the Humira will not be as effective.

Anybody else been told this?

Not me. I'm on Cimzia and although I was told it is more effective with Mtx wasn't offered the option of taking them together. Mostly because I kept getting chest infections on the Mtx.

Strange.

Was told there was 85% chance of it working alongside MTX and 60% without...

I'd much prefer try Humira on it's own, due to start it on 28th nov

I am on humira and take methotrexate tablets which I hate as make me feel so sick! Still waiting for some good results from that combination but have noticed a small improvement.

hey tom

i started enbrel about 9 years ago and had to stay on the mtx. I have PsA which responds super well to anti-tnf and within about 3 months i was well enough to stop the mtx. I was just as well after stopping the mtx!

Hi Tom,

I've been on Humira since 2003. The Humira worked really well for me and I very soon came off all my other arthritis drugs (Methotrexate, Sulphasalazine, Prednisolone). The Humira has kept everything very quiet on its own so I haven't had to take anything else with it. I do know people who take Humira and Methotrexate together as the combination works for them but it's not always clinically necessary.

However, I know that to qualify for Humira you have to have taken Methotrexate at quite a high dose for at least 6 months and still have high levels of inflammation in your blood - this is because Humira is such an expensive drug that they want to make sure that a cheaper drug won't do the job. I think you may have to be taking Methotrexate at the time that they prescribe Humira to qualify?

Hope this helps...

Trina, Thanks that is very helpful, I was on MTX for 9 mnths and due to bad reaction to Sulphasalazine I'm a "special case" so have been told I won't have to have tests etc for Humira.
