Subject: Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain and no joint swelling/inflammation

Hi, this is my first time on the forum and i'm hoping someone can help me. I've been suffering with RA for the last 6 years and it's been well controlled for the last 2 years until about 8 weeks ago when I literally woke up one day and joint stiffness/pain and fatigue had set in. I've finally seen the Rheumatologist today and she's said there's no joint swelling in any of my joints and so can't understand why i'm in so much pain. Does anyone else suffer joint pain with no inflammation or swelling? I'm beginning to think I might be going a bit mad...... Thanks for reading

No you aren't going mad. I frequently have pain without swelling and sometimes have swelling without pain. Can you ask her for a scan of your joints, sometimes they can see what is going on better than by eye.

Thanks for your reply. I've been referred for an ultrasound scan.....'urgently' but apparently with RA it doesn't mean that it's that urgent so it could be up to 4 weeks.

hi Emma i'm also in the same boat, i had my ultra scan last week and told they could see where my ra was affecting my hands before i started to take enbral which is now keeping the swelling in my hands down but they didn't check my feet which swell badly.
so i still am the same and told that the enbrel is working yet i'm still in lots of pain?

hopefully you will get some help. x

I had an ultrasound scan and the consultant who did it said I was in 'remission' because there was no obvious inflammation. This in spite of obviously swollen joints and pain too. When I mentioned this to my rheumy nurse, she said they like their own specialist ultrasound people to do the scans as they know what they are talking about, I was NOT in remission and itt was completely obvious to both of us

The lesson is......don't always take for gospel everything that is said to you. Get another opinion too.
