Subject: Shoes

Hi Everyone, Wonder if anyone can help. I'm having problems with my shoes, standing for any period of time or when walking. Does anyone recommend any they have found comfortable, Rheumy suggests those with thick, cushioned soles. As well as shoes want some trainers, my Sketchers make my balls hurt after a short while!!! Many thanks.

Many thanks for your replies. I haven't heard of a podiatrist before so will look into it. As the RA is in my feet, as well as other places, I find the swollen joints are making wearing shoes very painful. Again many thanks for your replies.

i find clarkes are brilliant as they are designed for comfort. they're often more expensive than i would want to pay for shoes (i'm a serious bargain hunter) but the quality is brilliant and they last forever. In fact, I had some heeled dolly shoes for work and i had them for about 3 years - they are the only heels i have ever been able to walk in 'cos they were like wearing slippers. I actually live and die in a pair of cheap and cheerful slip-ons from shoe zone. They're like a ballet pump but have a 5mm stack heel at the back - it gives enough elevation to take the pressure of the ankles. I always try to buy shoes that have a roll to them as the bones in my foot are just about fused together - if the shoe has a roll it does the work for me and stops me going "heel - toe" when i walk.

Let us know what you opt for 'cos i'm sure we'd all like to know what's good to try.

Hi Val, just read your question. I find Padders or Fly Flot are reasonably comfortable. I too have lots of problems standing and walking, it gets so painful. Also try buying the memory foam insoles from Matalan, I find they help a bit. Feel better.

Many thanks to everyone for replying. I've always been a Clarkes fan as they last well as well as being comfortable, but the ones I have now really hurt. The problem seems to be when my toe joints are more swollen than usual and the balls of my feet always seem to hurt. Am off work for a week so shoe shops here I come, have also been told Hotters.
Will definately ask doc about a podiatrist, chiropodist in my language.
Again many thanks, so good to know you are all out there understanding and advising.

Well went shoe shopping and bought a pair from Hotters, mainly because they are very light weight and have room for my toes to expand. The test will be next week when I am back at work. I have got some memory foam insoles, got the from Poundland, but although they help the balls of my feet they push the toes up so that they then rub more. Oh to be able to buy a pair of hand made shoes with all that I need on them, in my dreams!!!

Val

Most of Hotters shoes allow you to take the insoles out so you can put yours in, so more room to wriggle your toes. Apologies if I am telling you something here that you already know. If you do ask your GP about seeing someone about your feet, ask specifically for a podiatrist and not a chiropodist, from what I know it's the podiatrist that makes the insoles for you and not a chiropodist. Apologies again if you already know this.
