Subject: Sulfasalazine and NSAI
I have been taking sulfasalazine for 7 weeks now. My CRP although not high is rising slowly. I also have alot of pain and stiffness. I take co-codamol 30/500 but its not really touching the pain. I am some NSAI tablets which I used to take before I started sulfasalazine. Am I ok to take NSAI and sulfasalazine at the same time. I just dont feel well at all and the constant pain is really getting me down. Can anyone advise please. Thank you.

Thank you both. I will ring them tomorrow. My knee feels as if its on fire but no redness. The heat seems to be inside my knee if that makes sense. Got no sleep last night it was hurting so much.

Hiya Gillian - i was on full dose sulfa while taking mobic (meloxicam) and previously voltarol (diclofenac sodium) without any problems. I also talk 30/500 co-codamols. I was advised by my GP that I could take full dose co-codamols and then an extra couple of pure codeines when the pain was too unbearable (taking 10 x 30codeine might bung you up a bit so i always have lactolose to hand, you cannot take more than 8 of the 500paracetamols though as this can cause problems). Hope that helps lou xxx

Hi, yes my GP has also given me codeine 30mg X 2 at bedtime on top of the co-codamol. If you didnt get any probs taking some anti inflammatory tabs along side the sulfasalazine then I will try a couple. My pain isnt quite so bad today but far from gone. I thought hot weather would help me but so far its given me more pain than ever. I actually notice that before I get these pain flare ups, prior to this happening I am extremly fatigued and tired for a few days. After the couple of days of struggling with fatigue at work etc., I then come down with this dreadful pain. Seems to be the pattern lately. I wonder if the fatigue is a good indicator of bad pain to come. Seems like it. Take care xx

Hi Gillian, Like you I am also on sulafsalazine and have been on full dose for 4 weeks now. Consultant said it takes up to 12 weeks for full effect to be felt. I'm also on methatrixate, naproxine and tramodol. The tramodol is in place of co codamol as they didn't seem to do much. Like everyone I get really tired, want to fall asleep after lunch, and am going through a bit of a depressive period at the mo. Oops sorry all that is age related isn't it!!!!!!!!!! You have to laugh though, the alternative is screaming and then you get a sore throat.

Thank you for your reply. I too am feeling really down and almost tearful at times. I keep thinking of the future and how will I cope if the RA gets worse. Slowly but surely I am getting worse and it saddens me very much.
