Subject: Folic Acid presciption charges.

Hello Everyone,
I have recently been diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis and have been prescribed 15mg of Methotrexate along with 1 Folic Acid tablet per day.
As the Folic Acid is part of the prescription charges (£14.80 for the 2 items), and as there are only 28 Folic Acid tablets in the box I was wondering if anyone has substituted the prescription Folic Acid for a much cheaper version of the same substance from say the likes of Holland and Barrett where you could buy 200 tablets for £10! Or is this not a good idea due to the required strengths of the prescription Folic Acid.
The cynic in me says that the "off the shelf" Folic Acid would do the same thing.
Thank You.

A good pharmacist will advise you when you can buy something cheaper off the shelf. Ask them next time!

hi not sure about the folic acid but if you are going to be on regular medication have you had a look at the nhs perscription card which you pay £10 something a month and it covers all your perscriptions,my husband is on 5 different things so this has been a great help x

I asked my pharmacist about this but the dose you need which is 5mg of folic acid has to be by prescription - Im 99% sure the pharmacist cannot give you this high dose. Also, it is essential you take the right dose of Folic acid to counteract side effects of the methotrexate. I have a yearly Prescription card which is £105 for the year or £26 for 3 months but then you can have as many prescrptions as you need in that time. I have 5 prescriptions a month so it is definitely beneficial. Just type in "pre paid prescription" on google or yahoo and you can follow the link to pay over the phone or on the internet,

My specialist nurse told me that they had worked out how much it would cost to buy it and she said it's cheaper by prescription. I think that what you buy in health shops is nowhere the strength that you can get by prescription so you would have to buy loads for the appropriate dose.

I use the pre-paid prescription card, I always get 4 months supply of meds. from card. If you time getting your prescriptions right you can. I get mine from Boots and get it to start on the day I pick up a prescription they make sure that I get a prescription just before it expires and the start all over again when I need another lot. I know it's only a small saving I make instead of buying a yearly one, but I think this illness cost us so much as it is with everything else we have to buy so every little helps.
