I just wanted to ask, if you can get RA into remission, does that mean that you don`t have to take medication anymore or do you have to keep taking medication to stay in remission. Just wondered. rich.

think you have to keep with the medication to stay in remission but i have heard of people lowering doses of painkillers and DMARD's but usually with the rummys say so. Ive never had the chance to try it yet lol

Thanks Kirst. To be honest I don`t really know what remission is. I`ve looked up the definition and it says its `a ceasing of activity` but thats the bit I can`t get my head around because the only way to cease activity is to stop the immune system which is what we do now by taking medication, so surely remission would be much of the same but without the symptoms..I guess.

From what I understand Rich, the drugs we take do not stop, they simply slow down the whole process, so it can slow down then you have a time where you have no or little symptoms, and then you get a falre where the immune system goes into overdrive again. That is my understanding of it. Hope this helps you :o) Take care xx

Hi Rich , i have had remmissions and felt that maybe i don't need the drugs anymore don't be fooled into it You still need the medication i asked my Rummy about it and he said don't stop taking the drugs you are not "cured" just having an ease of symptoms and if you have a flare up it would be a lot worse as you have to get the medication back in you system. i hope this helps and pray for my next remmission

Hi My rheumatologist said that with RA if things become stable in another 2 years then he would advise coming off the medication gradually as the meds should hopefully supress the immune system to the point that I shouldnt need the medication. If however it came back then obviously it would mean going through the whole procedure again getting the right meds etc.
