Subject: feeling low

I have had ra for about 3 yrs it started after my daughter was born.To start it was said to be low grade and my consultant said it was ok to use painkillers antiinflams and i have followed diet accupuncture supplements etc also love swimming and yoga.started out really positive & i suppose 'lucky' to be low grade even though that is still something when in your hands! Anyway been on a rollercoaster with emotions when it can vary so much from day to day week to week. very supportive family friends husband gorgeous daughter! So things were going well few weeks back then had tummy bug for 10 days yuk. Now things have flared up which i know is prob because of bug.But so fed up with it. doc perscribed steroids on fri took one made me feel sick and weird head. now seeing nurse tomorrow. I guess it is time to try sulphalizine but i am so scared of side effects. How can it be that you can be okish some of the time and then it gets bad it is so hard living with the unpredictableness of it. people say stress can effect it but you get like that because of it! i have started saying to people i am ok when i am not because they can't do anything and i want to be known as me & not the person with aches & pains which i feel is happening. oh dear this has turned into a bit of a long account! sorry, thanks for listening.xx p.s i will put poppy 2 because i think there is another poppy

HI Poppy 2

I was you 7 years ago. Not long after having my daughter I suffered with symptoms. I didnt know what was happening to me, and felt that at 34, my body was letting me down.

I was on Sulpha intitially - the side effects werent bad, just large tablets, yellow wee, and nails, and my contacts went yellow too!

It didnt work for me, so I have been on MTX for several years and this has seemed to hinder the process...

I recall feeling v low too, as you do now. Pls try and be positive. I refuse to allow this condition to take over my life.

Stress always made my symptoms worsen, so try.. really try not to get stressed out.

Positive thinking is the key. AND>>>> do not forget to take pain killers.. paracetemol takes the edge off, so take them. Do not wait for the pain to set in.

Hi Poppy. I started with RA 8 months after my daughter was born. I already have a son so maybe its girls that start the problem with the hormones! My consultant believes the pregnancy triggered the RA and basically knocked the switch in the immune system. I was started on sulphasalazine 4 tablets a day straight away and had steroid injections. Ive had it about 2 years now and take Methotrexate and sulphasalazine aswell as Amitriptyline to help with nerve pain that RA can cause. I dont have any major problems with the medication - bit headachey and sickness on a Monday but otherwise ok. It took about 6 months for it all to work but the difference is AMAZING. I still have "off" days and am very stiff in a morning but otherwise with two young children and a job to do you just end up dealing with it. I definitely think having a positive state of mind helps. I felt like you at the time and felt bad for feeling so low and moaning about pain. I was also crying at lot at the start and couldnt believe I'd been so unlucky to have this but it is manageable. Its just a matter of getting the right medication. It just takes about 4 - 6 months so dont give up on the medication - too many people come off it after a few weeks or 2 months but it takes longer than that. It will get a bit better in time. Good luck

I think I can say ive prob been the lowest ive ever been over the last year. I do have depression but has been under control untill was diagnosed with PA.

For the last 6 months however there has been a lot of complications and a lot a lot alot of meds which havent helped. Clearly documented on here.

Ive tried different anti-depressants but nothing helped and was not getting out of bed for days.

Finally been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and possibly some PA and it has released a bit but still low but like everyone says once everything is clearer and the correct meds are working and thats the main word correct you will lift your spirits.

Hopefully once my meds are correct I will too..

Stay strong
