Subject: Is Degenerative disc disease really oestoarthritis of the spine?

I have just joined and I have for the last 11 years had spinal disc problems, I currently have 4 that have degenerated badly in my lumbar spine. I was curious if anyone knew whether this was really oestoarthritis of the spine, as consultants say its disc disease only. Yet it is the deteriaration of disc space so I am inclined to think maybe it is arthritis? Thankyou in advance xx

i think so Julie, i have degenerative disc disease in my neck and thoracic spine and i asked GP what that actually meant and she said it just basically means osteoarthritis.
I haven't heard anything since that disagreed with that!

Osteoarthritis of the spine can cause your disc to pop out of line, for sure. I had corrective surgery for the disc and the osteoarthritic spurs shaved away. MRI scan or CT scan to tell if osteoarthritis is present. Have you had either of the scans if you haven't maybe you could ask your consultant about them. Hope this helps.

Hi and thankyou for your replies :o)

I have had 2 MRI'S in the last 11 years, first one showed 2 discs gone and then one earlier this year which showed that 6 years later I have a further 2 more now , all in lumbar spine. I do not appear to have bone spurs or anything of that nature just black holes (lol) where the discs should be, or a paper thin line of what is left of the remaining discs. I am starting to get issues in my cervical spine as in it feeling uncomfortable to turn my head and stiffness from mid to upper back along spine and heaps of cracking (!) so I will mention this to my Rhuemy when I see her in September. Do any of you suffer with rheumatiod in neck or is it nearly always oestoarthritis? Thanks in advance & take care xx
