Subject: needing to loose weight

im rather over weight to what i should be and im adiment it is causing me more pain than i would be in if i lost the 3 stone excess im carrying around. Ive tried slimfast and plain old salads and fruit, even eatting my 2 year olds portion size. im doing that ive lost a bit but over the course of a year and now my weight is stuck, im not loosing nor am i putting on.
Anywawy im considering the cambridge diet for a few months to shift the excess. Has anyone got any advice that might help me or something i could try before i embark on such a drastic diet?
thanks x

I tried lighter life meal replacements but I was tired all the time. The arther makes me tired anyway so it was no good.

I've found i have a tendancy to overeat when i have a flare up (i think it's 'cos of the low energy levels the body must feel the need to add more energy). I was sent by my GP to Phoenix weight management at the hospital - a nutritionist would give me the rules (which I do follow) to a healthy diet (i.e. 1/3 starchy carbs, 1/3 vege and 1/3 made up of protein, dairy and fat). They diagnosed that the relationship with the arther and eating was a mild form of an eating disorder and I was to use distraction techniques when I felt the urge to binge - much easier said than done.

I only lost weight while pregnant due to terrible acid indigestion. I could only manage to eat grilled meat, new potatos and salad or crispy vege. I would only manage half a sandwich for lunch but would eat lots of fruit as it was managable. I would have a small bowl of cereal or crumpets with nutella and a glass of milk for brekkie.

I was 14 1/2 stone when i fell pregnant and just over 12 1/2 after giving birth! It is a simple case of putting fewer calories in than you use and chosing fruit and vege over other more unhealthy stuff. I think that the meal replacement diets are an unhealthy way of losing weight as it is to tempting to cheat. You are so hungry all of the time so feel like you have to have that piece of cake!!

I did also do the slimming world diet which help you lose weight slowly but, most importantly, help you keep the weight off. It gives you the tools to eat healthily rather than actually go on a diet.

Good luck kirst and let us know how it goes

kirsty i was thinking just the same - i am so desperate, i am eating like a horse and at the minute resemble something from the animal kingdom. I am looking into lipotrim (yet another vlcd) the only thing that is putting me off is the impact on the liver and the stress it may put on other internal organs and if it would be dangerous whilst on metx. don't want to ask the professionals as they would advise against - but i am so desperate and weightwatchers just doesn't cut it for me at present. what have you decided?

Mads, i have fallen off the wagon at the minute, i lost a stone and a half just by cutting out the cakes sweets biscuit you know all the nice stuff, but i also rewarded my self with a small treat on a Friday night, chocolate, glass of wine, be careful not to over treat yourself. Its cutting back not starving your self. Hope this helps. I need to get motivated again but it is hard.

Do the Arthritic meds cause weight gain?

I take a antidepressant that the GP has told me can cause weight gain or at least make losing weight slow so I am trying to eat healthier but cant do much exercise atm apart from walking (slowly)

Ive tried slimming world but find it hard to limit milk and bread so i have to adapt that slightly but then on a day im feeling low I eat junk food.

The online slimming world calculator and sins calculator is quite good but subscription is quite expensive.

hello all, i tried the cambridge diet for 3 days and have been soo ill ive had to stop it. Throwing up, abdo pain, headaches the lot, couldnt stomach pain killers ether. when i did some more reading on it can have funny effects on the liver so with being on MTX and other wonderful drugs ive decided id rather be chubby and have to watch what i eat like a hawk than have liver dammage because of an extream diet.
Im joining weight watchers and my husband has suggested we both go swimming, even when im sore leaning just floating in the water moving my arms and legs will do me the world of good (i hope). And if i find the pools too cold to the point where its hurting me im going to the doc to ask about hydro pools in the area i could use.
feeling a bit more positive about my fatness now lol.

Hi kirst, these fad diets are no good to anyone as when you return to normal eating the fat just comes back. You and your husband are right weightwatchers and gentle excercise is just what you need. The hydro pools are few and far between, i have just finished a six week treatment on the nhs, unfortunately we dont have any in our area for the public. I hope you find one. Take care wish you all the bestX

Hi Kirst,

i too have been on and off diets most of my life..! like most people here i love good food, wine, chocolate etc. i tried the cambridge diet once and lost a bit, but the problem is, when you do such a limited diet that your body gets used to far fewer calories and your metabolsim slows down drastically!! that means when you eat normally you will automatically put on weight. you lose muscle with such a restricted diet and when you regain weight, which you will, really quickly, you will put on more fat! Fat burns far fewer calories than muscle, so your claorie requirements will be LOWER than before..be warned! cutting down generally, avoiding sugar, alcohol, crisps and snacks is far better (not that i always manage that!!)Good luck!

totally agree with all of you the bad effects of the low calorie diets but for me the attraction is that it takes food out of the equation. Teatime is a nightmare for me - when i get home from work all i want to do is grab something simple but the children need a dinner and my husband always likes a big dinner (i don't eat meat so at times there could be 3 separate meals being made) so the stress of dealing with overeating, eating the wrong things etc are removed with the simplicity of shakes and soups. But i know that it doesn't last forever.

Hi Kirst,I went on the Cambridge diet with Hubby, not the sole souce the next one up, which includes one meal a day. We did it religoiusly for one month. Husband lost 2 stone, I lost nothing!!!I wanted to cry... Next month I carried on again, this time cut the mtx down by 5mg (on 15mg) . Lost half a stone but felt as rough as guts, so had to go back on meds. Stopped diet no point. I dont believe the meds make me put weight on, but I do believe that they affect my ability to lose weight. The only good thing is the half a stone has stayed off.
