Subject: Changing from Plaquenil to Methotrexate
I have been advised by my consultant that I must change from Plaquenil to Methotrexate. This is because of the probability that I now have GCA (Temporal arthritis). I have major reservations about this. I am also on high dose steroids each day (consultant wanted 80mg daily but I have agreed to 40mg only). Feeling very anxious about this major change in my medication. Would appreciate your imput. Thank you. Gillian

Hi Gillian, I have been on methotrexate now for 18 months, 10 months with the tabs, but to many side affects, so have been on injections for the last 8 months, and have never looked back. I like you was realy worried about taking this drug but It has realy helped in slowing down the disease. I had weekly blood tests for 6 months, and now just have them monthly. I do still get a few mouth ulcers and 1 OR 2 coldsores more than normal, but I do think its a small price to pay. A lot of people can not tolerate mtxt, I cant take more than 15mg a week some people less and some people can tolerate a higher dose we are all different, and you will be monitored regulaly. anyway good luck with what you decide. take care. x

I found your post interesting as I was on Sulfazalazine for a year then in Dec they added Methotrexate and then in March added Plaquenil so now on all three.. is this strange? The pain has been so unbearable that now on Co-codamol and nasrapole (not collected this yet so can't remember spelling) I have felt ok in self with the methetrexate but my symptoms have got worse!!! I feel drained the day after taking but no other side effects
