Subject: Experiences Please: Reconstructive surgery of the feet

Hi my name's Jill and I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, I'm considering having reconstructive surgery on my toes, my big toe sits beneath my remaing four which are all contorted.

I'm very unsure about having this procedure done as I've had conflicting reports about the experiences after surgery.

If there's anyone at all that has had this done, whether the outcome is good or bad could you please take me through your recovery right from the day of your surgery.

Many thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Jill.

Hi Jill,

I've also been offered foot surgery (because of my arthritis) as my toes are in much the same state as yours by the sound of it. The surgeon said I'd need to have one foot done at a time and there would be a 3 month or so recovery time - however I would be able to put weight on the foot almost from day 1. I was worried about this as using crutches would be difficult for me to do.

So if anyone out there has had this proceedure done we would be glad to hear how you got on...

Hi Trina, Jill here again. thank you for replying to me. i hope we get a reply from someone who's had the same kind of surgery done. if it's any help to you i use two walking sticks to get around all the time and it does take some adjusting to but it sounds like you will only need to do this for 3 months so that won't be too bad for you if the surgery helps you after that. take care Trina and feel free to keep in touch.

Hi Jill
I have had reconstructive surgery on one foot, many years ago,and of the operations I have had(13) it was the easiest to cope with. My big toe was straightened and fused (it was previously under the other toes) and the next toe had the middle bone removed so that it was straight. My foot was in plaster for 6 weeks but I could get about quite well without crutches. Hope this is of some help. Good luck!

Hello Marian,

Thankyou so much for your reply. It has really helped me to hear your comments, I feel much more comfortable about the procedure and I can't thank you enough for your input.

It sounds as though the op you had is very similar to the procedure suggested to me by my surgeon.

Would you mind telling me honestly about the post op pain you endured and how long it lasted before you felt comfortable.

Hope to speak to you soon, Jill.

Hi Jill
Sorry to have taken so long to reply - I have only just read your message. It was a long time ago, but I have no memory of it being very painful at all after the op. I was just so pleased to have straight toes and don't remember it being very painful at all while I was walking around with the plaster on my foot. It was the easist of the operations I have had. Perhaps I was very lucky but I hope you will not find it too painful either.
Hope this helps, Marian

I have had big toe sugery (you can see my post on chielectomy on this site.) I haven't found it too bad at all. I could walk on it the same evening, albeit very gingerley, with morphine in me and with the obligatory old lady shoe from physio! I got sticks not crutches as they are better for your shoulders the physio said. Good luck. Hope you are not still waiting.

Hi there. Well here i am back out and about already after my surgery, i said i would let you know how things went so here goes, the whole thing was so much better and less painful than i expected, and i had to have extra surgery on top of what they had said because my feet were so bad. I am thrilled with the results and so pleased you helped put my mind at rest so that i went ahead with the surgery, if anyone out there is faced with a similar situation please let me put your mind at rest. i had all ten toes operated on and they were very twisted and almost unrecognisable as toes, although i am thrilled with the results, my surgeon wasn't entirely satified with one toe. if she decided to re-align it i wouldn't be in the slightest nervous to allow her to do it. i found this site looking for reassurance which i found, i hope i can reassure others in the same situation who may find themselves with the same apprehentions. thank you for your replies and i will keep my eye on the boards to see if i can ever help someone else the way you helped me. take care and bye for now. jill x

Hi Jill,

Great to hear your surgery went well. Maybe I'll have to think about getting mine done. I don't think they do 2 feet at once so will you be having the other foot done as well?

Definately got me thinking...

Hi Trina & Jill
Was interested to read your posts. My left foot it very deformed with RA, and I have been offered surgery. The main joints have been eroded, and the surgeon wants to remove them as I am walking round with dislocated toes. Also, the pad under the base of the toes has moved due to the deformity, so basically, I am walking on bone, and in a lot of pain. Whats putting me off having the op, is the surgeon has said the toes will deform again, and the pad will move again, So at the moment I cant see the point in going through with it, as it's not going to be a long term fix.

hi i had surgery on my Big Toe due to OA ( fusion) 2 years ago!! if i had the choice again i wouldnt have gone ahead with it!! iam in pain still and the OA is clever it moved up a joint lol and so i am in more pain, the toe is stiff now and so the other toes are now going behind the big toe and so it has consecquences too!! i am due to go back to see the specialist who i think will want to reset it!! ughhhh the thought just puts me off!! i know eventually it will get that bad that i will have no choice but for now i would rather suffer!! dont get me wrong RA is bad and i understand that some surgerys are a must but if you can hold off as long as you can is my advise-

Hi Trina. Let me assure you, they do opperate on both feet at the same time. I know this because i had both mine done at the same time. I was given the option of having them done separatly but decided to go for it and have them both done at once rather than having one done, then waiting to heal, then having to go through it all again. This would have taken so much longer. it turned out fine to have them done together. I was up and about much sooner than i expected. take care and please let me know if you decide to go ahead with surgery. Bye for now,Jill

Hi Stunt. Hmmm tricky one this. It sounds like your feet are different to mine. The pads under my feet have not moved and, although painful if i stand or walk for long, it seems like yours are more painful. I am not walking on bone so i don't really know what to say to you bless you. My surgeon did say there was a chance of it going back to being twisted but it was a slim chance. it seemed worth it to me to take the chance and i'm so glad i did as i am very happy with the results. take care and i wish you well whatever you decide to do. Bye for now, Jill,
