Subject: Cimzia/Anti tnfs and diet
I was told when I started on Cimzia I could eat anything I liked but when I looked it up on a well respected arthritis site, the advice was to avoid certain foods such as raw eggs, blue cheese, brie, pate, cold cuts and so on - to avoid listeria or salmonella poisoning. It's becoming tricky when I go out to eat as there is always something on the list. What do other people do?

hello bsk i am thick - what is anti tnfs? i am not on cimzia but on metx and it says to avoid the foods that you have listed. Must admit i forgot all about it until i read your post and have had goats cheese more than once. I Don't eat meat so that hasn't been a problem.

hi bsk, truthfully I avoid nothing, just use common sense really, i have not been advised by my rheumy team to avoid these foods, do they advise that for those on methotrexate also?

yes cookie in the little purple metx blood result book - very similar food exclusions to my pregnant sister but as i previously said i forgot all about it and the medical people don't labour it - i think the rheumy nurse spoke briefly of it at the beginning.

Hi Mads and Cookie - I think my nurse is more relaxed about it but on a certain arthritis website it says to avoid those things. Hygiene very important too and I am careful about that when cooking. I will talk to her at my next appointment.

When I was on Cimzia I was also told to be careful in the sun too as apparently anti-TNFs can increase your risk of skin cancer if you do not take proper care. I always used a factor 50 and a hat!

Yes, I am more careful in the sun these days but only go as far as using factor 30.

I have been on Cinzia for approximately two years and this week after a biopsy on my skin I was told I have malignant melanoma. Now waiting for removal and discussion of what my options are for "next" as both doctors say I will probably be unable to be on any TNF blocker in the future. Has anyone here been diagnosed with melanoma?

Hi JKJ, so sorry to hear that. It must be a blow both to have the melanoma and to have to stop your drugs. I haven't had one but it is something I am aware of and look out for. Best of luck with the treatment.

Thanks Deborah. I've been off them for a year, though might be back on something again soon. I think the policy is changing and they are now saying you can eat what you like. I avoid raw eggs and undercooked meat, mainly.
