Subject: uurrggghhh .... MRI!!

Well .. I went and had my MRI today. No dye injection this time, thank God. I hate MRIs. It makes me feel like I'm in a coffin. Big time panic. Today I kept my eyes closed and tried to think of happy places. I was in there for over 30 minutes. I felt very shaky when they finally released me. So glad it's over.

Hi Gaynor
I have to have an MRI in 2 weeks with a Dye injection. Not looking forward to it as im very claustraphobic. I have had an MRI before but it was only on my wrist and lasted 10 minutes. I didnt have any dye put in. This time I have to have the dye, could you tell me what its like please? Because the thought of that is making it worse. Thankyou.

Hi Teresa. I believe that most people don't react to the dye. I was one of the few that did. It made me feel really hot - like heat suddently whooshed from my ankles to my head. And I got a bit dizzy - that might have been because I was panicking. The actual MRI machine is quite a tight fit, but at least your head tends to get pushed into a slightly bigger area. They give you headphones and play music to you. You have a panic button that you can press and they will get you out immediately. You can hear them talking to you and you can talk to them throughout if you want to. I just kept my eyes closed and pretended I was laying on my bed at home. If you are claustrophobic, you can let them know that and, if necessary, they can give you a tranquiliser to help you stay calm. I would give them a ring ahead of time so that they are aware of it. Best bet is to keep your eyes closed and imagine yourself in a lovely open space - like the beach. Do let us know how you get on.

Hi Gaynor, well I had my mri today. It was not as bad as I thought. Well I nearly freaked at first when they said I had to go in head first laying on my stomach with my arms outstretched, but the mri staff were so great letting me try it out first to see how it would be. Once I was in the scanner it was not nearly as bad as I had worked myself up into thinking!! And the contrast dye was fine, I didnt feel any sensation when they injected it in and feel fine now. In fact the only thing I can complain about was the laying with my arms outstretched was very uncomfatable on my shoulders and elbows.

So if anyone else has to have one.. I hope they have a good as experience as I did!!!

Take care xx
