Subject: Advice please

For past six weeks I have suffered pain in my hip. Two weeks ago the hip also swelled up.
First doctor I saw said I had a sacral iliac injury and sent me to physio who said it was my back. When the swelling got worse I went back to GP who told me I was unwell and organised blood tests and an xray. This week I got called back to surgery to be told that my rheumatiod factor was very high but my Crp was normally, but would refer me to a rheumatologist urgently and to take time off from work and rest. The GP also asked me what I thought it might be ???
I have a strong history of rheumatoid arthritis in family with my great grandmother being wheelchair bound and my grandmother suffering with finger joints, same with my mum.
My job involves a lot of walking about...I am now concerned about my future, is this it? has my life finished? are treatments for RA effective?

Hi val sorry your going through all of this. There are varying degrees of ra so dont feel all doom and gloom yet. Treatments have moved on a great deal in recent years. I work full time so it doesnt mean the end of your job etc. The important thing is to get reviewed by a rheumatologist and see what they say. Take it easy and get plenty of rest x

Yeah. Get some rest. Take some anti-inflams regularly, for now. Treatment has moved on for the better, so fast over recent years. Don't think the worse or compare with your family history cos believe me, they didn't have anti-tnf back then. Learn to relax and make sure u talk to people about it and your worries/concerns. Done be afraid! Good luck. Only you can set your path to what life u want. But you must seek help for all aspects of your condition, be it physically or mentally.

Hey Val ... sorry for late response. I've been away for a week. Sounds like you have been through a rough time. Don't despair about your job. Contact Access to Work (just google them and you'll find contact details). If you have a newly diagnosed disability, they should be able to cover the costs of reasonable adjustments in the workplace to make it possible for you to stay in work. They are great and they have helped me a lot. Good luck hon. Be kind to yourself and listen to your body.
