Subject: Trendy shoes for arthritic feet??

Hi

I am a 41yr old with arthritic feet. My toes are swollen and they have seperated on one foot. My RA has well and truly settled in my feet and despite taking MTX it doesn't stop the pain altogether, sometimes it's really sore to walk.

I've just spent £52 on a pair of low Rieker sensible shoes, but after a week of wearing them my feet are worse than ever. I now have to wear them with memory foam insoles inside but they are now really tight on my feet and the top of the shoe rubs my bent toes!!!!!!

My podiatrist wants me to wear a shoe with lots of padding on the bottom, low, straps across my toes and ankle and tells me to wear trainers but when wearing a summer dress trainers just aren't a good look.

Does anyone know where I can buy trendy, pretty, low, supportive sandles. I would like some gladiator sandles ideally but they must have a thick cushioned bottom. Clarkes and alike cost the earth and can look quite old fashioned, I don't want to wear shoes my mum wears just yet!!!

Does anyone have any idea's??

Thanks

Sue

Flyflot (doesn't sound very trendy does it) have very cushioned sandals. Some look old fashioned but some are quite nice. If you google it you can have a good look. They post out to you aswell. Not sure where you live but they have an outlet in York. Also, Hotter are much nicer than they used to be. Some of them are quite trendy now and they do have gladiator sandles. Not sure how cushioned they are though but a podiatrist I went to recommended them. Hope this helps :-)

Hey there - I would suggest buying some strappy sandals and glueing in some orthopaedic insoles. Then take them to a shoe fixer and ask them to put on some thickish soles for you. Gladiator sandles are good. Also, I absolutely SWEAR by my Celtic boots (also called Ugg boots). Just amazingly cushioning for the feet. They are so good that I'm considering going into the local Newquay branch and asking if they can do me some sheepskin insoles for my sandals. Hey ... it's worth a try. I think Celtic has an online shop. Not sure if they have sandally shoes. I think a woolly liner would be fab for things like Crocs - which are very cushioning anyway. Or ... he he ... here comes a radical idea. Go native: weave yourself some decorative beady things to go round your big toe, over your foot and around your ankle ... and then go barefoot when you can. Start a new trend. (see .. I live in Cornwall .. we can get away with things like that here!! LOL)

Thanks ladies. I've had a pair of flyflots and they are good. There's got to be a market for reasonably priced trendy arthritic shoes, I may have to take it to dragons den!

I wore my memory foams inside a pair of cheap gladiator sandles in the hot weather a few days ago and they slid out of the shoe and the sole of the foam was flapping out the side of them, it was all very embarrassing when walking through M&S. I think glue IS the way forward!!!!!!

Sorry Sue but I have given up looking !! I'm 57 now though I don't suppose it's such a big issue with me to have pretty shoes. Although I did try last June for my Daughters wedding some Hotters thinking they should be okay ? ..... err no they killed me feet I was in so much pain at the Wedding I couldn't make the evening reception !! I always wear the very VERY padded skater type shoe or trainer. Thinking back though to the 70's some of the shoes I wore then probably contributed to my bad feet now !! All those platform soled high shoes and boots !! Makes my feet wince just to think about them.

I wear Crocs Relief and Alegrias. I wore the Alegrias to the hospital to have some insoles fitted for Plantar Fascitis and the consultant said they were ideal. the have a really good footbed already but you can also remove the insole and put an orthotic in.

Try fashion world. I bought some gladiator type sandals from them. They have a flexible sole and they do various widths. I can fit my special insoles into them. Best of all i can actually walk in them and they look good.
