Subject: Fusing of the ankle

Hey, had JIA since I was 2yrs old (I am now 16) and my surgeon advises me that I should have my left ankle fused - I am too 'high risk' for ankle replacement surgery.
I would just like to know what it is like to have it - I already walk with a limp, have been in a wheelchair (in and out) for years and had two hip replacements when I was 11.
Do you think I should go ahead with it?

Henry sorry to hear of your predicament. I was offered an ankle fusion only to be refused one by another surgeon !! Think it was my age [ 57 ] and having Diabetes. I was told I would still walk with a limp with fusion but at least there wouldn't be pain with it, I have to wear an orthotic ankle brace and walk with a stick. Hope you get it sorted out and I'm sure I've read someone else on the forum has had an ankle fusion so hope they can come along and advise you as you are only young yet - look through the older posts see if you can find it ;0)

Hi Henry. Sorry to hear about your situation. I think having a joint fused is a big decision really. I would ask for a 2nd opinion - at least then your mind is put at rest that it is the right decision from the medical side. Good luck to you.

Hey Henry, I had my ankle fused in october 2010, I'm 32 and have had JIA since I was 11 months old. My email is lucyjepson@hotmail.co.uk give me a shout if you have any questions. I put some of my journey into a letter for someone who was going to have it done - can send it you.
I'm now fused, out of plaster and starting to walk. My ankle moves almost as much as it did before (side to side, not up and down) I dont regret having it done and intend to get back to work this summer. The arthritis pain has gone, it is painful but a different pain which is improving as I am becoming more mobile. I'm now queen of one of those OAP walkers so can put my bag in the trolley and sit down and rest whilst out.
Ask me anything you want! Good luck xx
