Subject: weight and RA

hi everyone hope all are well

i know this is a subject that lots of people hate to discuss especially the ladies but i was wondering if anyone else has been in the same boat as me
since i've had RA (feb 2010) my weight has become greater. i have been on prednisolone so it comes with the territory and depression has ment that i have been comfort eating. i was already over weight at about 15 stone after having my son in june 2009 and now i'm at about 16,9 ( having lost about 7lb the last 2 weeks)
but i have found my RA to have gotten worse through this time and my knees especially very painful.
i hate the thought that i have made myself worse through the weight gain and over eating, i should have been more careful and watched what i was eating but i just needed some comfort to get me thought this hard time, i know it sounds like an excuse but do you think it was just me being an over eater or due to these problems?

sorry to moan and hope someone understands this

Hi! I am new to the forum and find it very encouraging and supportive :-) I was diagnosed in May 2010 although had been having symptoms for a very long time before that. Like you Davina I have been on prednisolone and put on about a stone and a half in weight at least. Some of that is comfort eating but a lot can be put down to the prednisolone and a very sedentary lifetstyle now that we can't move about as much. I don't think strict dieting is a good idea for our mind or body but just little adjustments and a little walking if possible will be beneficial in the long term. Please don't 'beat yourself up' about this. It is a pretty tough illness to cope with and our medications help us but cause other problems!! Take care...x

Oh thank God ... I thought I was the only one. I'm not on that medication, but my weight seems to be inching up. I've got to do something here to take the pressure off my joints. Atkins always used to work well for me, but with my medications it doesn't really work anymore. Has anyone tried the low GI diet? I'm just wondering how well it works. It seems like quite a healthy lifestyle. I can't really cook all that well anymore, so I need something easy.

Well none of us can help giving in to nice foods when we have aches and pains all day. Its ok for others to say well dont eat this and that and the next thing they are munching on chocolate and a cream cake in front of you.Oh dear what a laugh, pass me that cake no one has eaten.LOL

Sounds like we all need Harry Potter and one of his magic spells: "OBESE-OFF-ACUS"!! There's just never a wizard around when you need one. No fair! Oh well ... I guess we're going to have to just do it the old fashioned way: healthy eating and exercise. See, one day when I'm dead and gone, I am seriously going to have to a word or two with God: "Like .. hey Dude .. what were you THINKING when you created fat cells?????"
