Subject: Methotrexate/ Coldsores/ Vitamins

Hi all, first time poster on here. I am 27 and have had psoriatic arthritis for about 3 years. I am currently on 15mg of methotrexate per week with one folic acid tablet 3 days later. The problem is I get coldsores on my mouth and they are very frequent and unsightly. My confidence has taken a hell of a knock. The methotrexate has helped with the pain and I know it now makes me immunocompromised but I was wondering if anyone could suggest vitamins or suppliments to help strengthen my immune system to helpfully control the coldsores and maybe give me more energy. I dont take any vitamin supplements but I was hoping for some advice as to what to take and when. I would like something to give me more energy, stop these coldsores and possibly give me a healthier complextion. I have also recently been diagnosed as having type 2 diabeties which doesn't help. Any information would be very much appreciated. I was reccomended l-lysine to boost my immune system also. Thanks.

Peter

Vitamin C is very good for cold sores. The guys on here are so supportive I am sure they will give you lots of good sound advice.I have heard Lysine is also good but i dont know anyone who has tried this. Your confidence will come back with great guns believe me. Life chucks stuff at us and i call these my hurdles in the last five years I had a pacemaker fitted back surgery diagnosed with Osteoarthritis and am now being checked for RA. My last post was a downer as i felt fed up this morning. My son helps me feel positive he tells me each time i get over something it makes me stronger for the next. Mostly I agree. I have loads more positive in life great husband three kids three fantastic grandchildren. All by the age of 60. celebrated with limo taking me for a great meal on the Thames and bringing back home to flowers. champaigne chocolates(my sin) Oh yes and a new mobile i can sort of use lol. So life is a challenge and a fantastic surprise as well. I hope this little note may be a little bit of support you need good luck and keep smiling xx

Hi Peter, just check with your rheumy nurse before you take any supplements as I was told not even vit C while you are on mtx. 'Nothing internal only external' she said. I think there are some topical creams you can get for cold sores, ask your doctor to prescribe something.

Hi peter I am on 15mg of mtx and was getting 1 cold sore after the other, so my rheummy has told me to take 6 folic acid a week, but not on mtx day I still get the odd cold sore but they are rare at the moment also I was getting lots of mouth ulcers they have also cleared up but he told me not to take vitamins as they boost your imune system and the mtx is trying to supress it. hope this helps.

bsk and Lynn B, thanks for shedding some more light on the situation. Called the hospital there and they also advised against vitamins. I was wondering wether taking immune system boosting supliments would interfere with the mtx, thanks for the advice. Peter
