Subject: I want to do First Aid course
Hi, I'm a 43 year old whose had RA since 9 years old in my neck, knees, elbows, and feet. I've managed well over the years and tried not to let it stop me doing anything. But sadly today I hit a snag, I'm on a Childcare course with First Aid built in. As my knees are very painful I couldnt stay on them long enough to give CPR to the mannequin, although I gave compressions. Tutor says I cannot get a certificate now as I am not physically able to perform. So frustrating, been practicing all afternoon, and with a supporting hand on the floor can just about do it, but they won't allow it. What do other's think?

To be fair Trace, I agree with the instructor. If you couldn't resuscitate a person then he can't give you a certificate of competency that includes that. I don't know your reasons for doing the course but if it's to work in a childcare setting then OFSTED rules are that there should be A person qualified in relevant 1st aid on site at any time, not all staff need to be. Good luck

Trace this is rubbish im a qualified nurse i have cpr updates yearly when im doing my update we move the dummys onto the table this is completly acceptable practice if you were involved in a real life resus of a child believe me adrenalin takes over and you would do what you would need to do but you shouldnt have to cripple yourself in the theory of resus might be worth while speaking to your resusitation officer at your local hospital for advice ask what they do for staff with disabilities x

I work in a childcare setting. By all means seek advice as Cookie suggests. I gave my opinion and still hold it but what I was trying to get across was that (other than child minding) any childcare setting has to have a minimum of 2 staff on duty and only 1 of them need a relevant 1st aid certificate so not being able to acquire one should not affect your possible career plans / ability to complete the course.

I have psoriatic arthritis and I passed a first aid course a few weeks ago. It took a week or so for my knees to recover and I found it pretty exhausting but I did it.

the reality is when your recusing kids you rarely do it on the floor anyway babies and small kids would be on your knee / table anyway my comment of its rubbish wasnt aimed at you trace but the tutors running the course

Hey there. I'm joining the discussion late, but under Disability Discrimination Act the trainers are required to make reasonable adjustments to make it possible for you to overcome your barriers to learning. Good luck.

Exactly gaynor i firmly believe when people are as ridgid as this when teaching they are lacking in real experience of cpr. Ask a paramedic they are who teach us they will tell you that as long as you have effective compressions how and where you resus is secondary. In hospitals patients collapse in any number of places adaptability is the name of the game :-)
