Subject: Bit worried

I have just seen my consultant who said that she may have to get me off my mtx

She said there are levels which are nothing to worry about, but that were high to do with my liver, but that if this weeks blood test was high also, she may have to change my meds

Thing is Im worried as I may have gone over my allowed units of alcohol & so then its my fault & mtx was working well.

Try not to worry see whar this weeksblood tests are like a week or two going over your units may have a little effect on your liver results but not long term try to stay alcohol free until this weeks test. The raised results are far more likelt to be as a result of the mxt that a bit extra wine. Milk thistle is fabulous at reducing liver inflamation if you want to take a supliment that could settle your liver down a little xx

I've been drinking shit loads recently, as long as I leave it 4 days or so before the test the ALT seems to be ok. Mine is currently 67.

The "Limit" is a load of bollocks in my mind and also confirmed by a GP friend, as is the normal 28 units for healthy people.

Don;t get me wrong I went 6 months without drinking last year when I felt ill, all I'm saying is that guides are just guides only.

Anyway, I'm off to the pub :-)

I'm taking MTX and I do drink wine. Have been told by my specialist nurse that if my alt results are fine then I have no need to worry. Mine are always in the high teens low twenties and have been told that they don't get worried until it hits 70. Have also been told that food can make it go up, so it's not always alcohol that cause it to raise, so I wouldn't worry too much about one test result.

I have read post on other forums that peoples readings go up that don't drink at all.

Tom.......I have read that the recommended units per week were just plucked out of thin air and no research had been done it to it. But Tom if you are not drinking for a few days before you have your blood took you are giving your liver a chance to recover and the alt test is not showing how your liver is working the other 24 days a month (thinking here that you are having bloods done monthly). Sorry don't want to lecture you but I do have a drink the night before my blood test done so that way I can see if drink is causing any problems...........after all you only have one liver.

Hi Karen i never drunk alcohol when i was on MTX and i had a bad reaction to it my Alt was 80 +. I had been on MTX for a few months and so i had to come off it. Any how its probably not your fault may just be your body reacting to it as it takes a while to kick in. Good luck.

Well thanks to you all for your replies

Mine was only 48 so low in comparison to yours ant lol

Saying that, the results of the last bloods were taken when I had been taking it easy, the bloods taken yesterday, were after me indulging after a holiday & not being on meds for 2 weeks so thought Id make the most of it, god knows what the alt tests will this time!

Waiting for her to call as she said she would if she thought that this lot would be too high,

So consultant told me to stick to 7 units, wish Id asked a night or a week although I knew what she meant ha ha

Im going through enough at the mo, without having to say goodbye to a cheeky tipple now & again!

I know what you mean karen some rheumy staff have a distinct lack of sense of humour when i tried mxt the nurse said about stopping drinking when i said she might as well. Kill me now she gave me such an odd look thought she was going to ask me if i needed to see someone about my " problem" jesus ive lost so much to this disease im not going to loose my white wine too! !!! Lol

Paula, don't worry I don;t take it as a lecture! :)

Got my latest results back and ALT was 99. I had a bit of a ticking off but like others i just said I'm going through alot recently and have had a few blow outs, I'll take a couple of weeks off the booze now and hopefully it will come down.

Bottoms up!
